Because they needed invocations that people would want to take I guess.

Plus they probably didn't want Warlocks to be able to curse someone every fight.

This. Warlock spell slots recover on a short rest, so any spells that they wanted Warlocks to have but didn’t want them to be able to cast every encounter ended up as a long rest Invocation.

Yea, my thoughts are about how one could balance the use of bestow curse if the player can recharge on a short rest. Also, since the spell is automatically upcast, by the time a warlock gets 5th level spell slots the spell would last 8 hours without concentration.

They also don't get the thematically appropriate ray of sickness (despite the "quick build" suggesting you take it).
