I’m just glad we all decided that magic shops are silly.
did we!? I missed that!

Magic shops are only silly in worlds where magic items aren’t being made by living professional crafters, or where adventurers are rare. In a world like Eberron, magic item shops would definitely exist, but generally won’t have high end items.

That’s great for you, but not everyone is as conservative with who they block. Lots of us are on people’s block lists, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for petty reasons, sometimes for completely unknown reasons, and it’s really poor user experience that none of us are able to use notifications as intended. Not being able to see Lowkey13’s posts is frustrating, but understandable. Not being able to see or post in the survivor thread is more annoying, but I can live with it. Being unable to be directed to the correct place when anyone quotes me or gives me xp/laughs, or when I click to see the original post of any other user from a post that quotes them, in any thread Lowkey13 has ever posted in, is unacceptable.

I’m not saying “let’s just go back to how ignore worked.” I am saying, “Something needs to be done about block completely breaking redirects.”

Cool. I was responding to max’s insistence on going back to the ignore function.

#1 A user action shouldn't prevent the blocked user from seeing posts by another user. (The block feature as implemented currently does this)
#2 A user action shouldn't bork site features that provide convenient redirects. (The block feature as implemented currently does this)

Personally I am fine with block being a 2-way feature. They can't see your posts and you can't see theirs solves a lot of issues. However block needs to stop being a 3-way feature. It should never prevent you from reading or responding or even redirecting you to any other users post that was not part of the 2 person block interaction.

On top of all this, block is trivially easy to bypass if someone desires. Simply visiting the forum while not logged in allows a user that has been blocked by another to circumvent half of the block feature, the half that is supposed to prevent them from reading the blocker's posts. In all situations except when the blocker is the thread starter, the blocked user can simply log in and make a non-directed reply to whatever point the blocked person was making. And finally as another user pointed out, a person can simply make an alternate account.

So what exactly is the argument that block should be able to do all the things I say it shouldn't be able to do? I really think those that want block to remain exactly the same ultimately just want the power to punish another poster instead of just being able to keep from having to interact with them.

Cool! What’s any of that got to do with what I said?

So, since cbwjm “is totally fine with the current system,” but has, based on their earlier posts in this thread, not experienced the issue where notifications and redirects don’t work properly due to being on someone’s blocked list, I’ve gone ahead and blocked them, to see if they’re still fine with it after actually experiencing firsthand the problems it can cause. The fact that I can do this is a serious problem. Blocking should be a means of keeping the peace, so that people who clash can avoid engaging with one another, not a weapon someone can use to prove a point in an argument or punish other users with.
