Wizard has worked as a psionics class for many of us for decades. So I wouldn’t use the world never.
I'll accept that you re-fluffed it and called it a psionics class, but re-fluffing a wizard does not a psionics class make. You can dress up a cat as a dog and call it a dog, but it's still going to be a cat.

To be a psionics class, you need different mechanics.

Why?

Yeah, it seems to me the mechanics are less important. It’s the fluff and result that are important. So what is a psionist? Do superhuman things with the mind power. Pretty much it. Which can be achieved by modeling spell point sorcerer or even warlock short rest powers. I don’t think you HAVE to have a unique mechanic to accomplish that. Unique powers, sure. But not necessarily unique mechanic

Which means no components, no somatic, and no verbal needed for their abilities. A cleric can't do that. A bard can't do that. A wizard can't do that. A warlock can't do that. A druid can't do that. A sorcerer can't do that. It takes different mechanics to accomplish that, not just fluff.

Sorcerers can though. In fact in my opinion sorcerer is a perfectly fine skeleton to drop the psionic fluff over and re-skin it as a psionist. Limited spell list, can do it all with no components, tailor the spell list to psionic-like spells, use spell points for subtle spell, and it's done.

Disagree. But whatever floats your boat. Can’t hurt to have more options for those that want them. I still think 2E psionics class was great.

I actually like what they've done but I'm now not so sure about the way they've done it. ISTM that they should have used the Sorceror and not the Wizard.

They did, with the Aberrant Mind in September. They've been subtly doing Psionic variants for months now.
