D&D 5E Would you prefer warlord or psion as a new class?

Okay. Let's reset and slow down. I understand that Mearls meant it as a joke. He laughed about it and corrected himself. HOWEVER, this joke has since been used by other people in a non-joking manner as a serious point against the Warlord regardless of whatever Mearls intended or however he intended the utterance. And it's not dishonest to MAKE A JOKE about shouting an arm back on. Jokes, which are obvious jokes (which this was - stated as such at the time) are not dishonest. That's part of what makes them jokes. If I make a joke about sleeping with someones mom, and it's clear it's a joke, it's not dishonest because it's not intended to be taken as truth. Which this joke was not - and which I've never seen anyone take as truth other than the people who were offended by it and dishonestly claimed he was serious when he blatantly obviously wasn't.

You're the only one in this thread who at least at one point seemed to be acting like the joke should be taken seriously.

Mistwell, you can stop going back to the joke aspect. Mearls used as a joke. I'm not so much talking about that instance.

I don't think that it is fruitful to send people to searching through past threads here and elsewhere where this occurred. It's a fool's errand. And it's not a strawman if I can't name someone off the top of my head. Can we move on from this because I doubt that this line of back-and-forth is particularly welcoming for this thread?

BY THE WAY: If anyone who is still reading this thread is curious, I voted for the Psion.

They already made wizard psionic subclasses. To be a Psion, there needs to be unique Psion class abilities. Lack of those = not a Psion class. There also needs to be a lack of component use as Psions have no components. It's literally impossible to use Sorcerer and Wizard to be a Psion, because both use components and they lack unique Psion class abilities. All classes have unique abilities.

There are many creative ways to solve that. So many. That aren’t even unbalanced. I don’t think the archetypes they made were very good. But I so like some of the spells. And I am agreeing. With you on the point of making one for those that want it.

It's kind of a moot point to ask for them, because at this rate they aren't going to happen. People want them to be different and special mechanically, but the system demands they function the same way as everyone else.

I would rather a class that can think your arm back on rather than one that can shout your arm back on.

The Paladin does share features with other classes which exist within the game. Coincidentally, it attacks in a way very similar to a Fighter, and both classes gain fighting styles. Though, the Paladin does indeed have aspects which are a unique defining feature of the Paladin.

The paladin has 9 unique class abilities, before you look at the individual oaths.

What do you imagine as a unique defining feature of a Psion?

There were a lot of Psionic feats in 3e that could be converted.

mind powers... ok, so like enchantment magic and bardic abilities or something different? Is the difference in what the powers are or how the powers are used?

It's in how they are presented/used. Psionic "magic" needs to feel like internal mental powers, not like drawing on an outside source.

My suggestion for using ideas from Sorcerer were due to seeing many Psion concepts using a pool of points to augment abilities. I had thought that might be more fitting than the school structure and abilities fixed to certain levels of progression.

Something similar, but with different abilities that are more Psion related might work. Again, the 3e feats are a good place to start.
