If I'm to be honest with myself, it's to slowly drop out of the RPG scene. I think I'm just getting burned out after 3+ decades. It just gets harder and harder for me to move towards a gaming session. I've dropped DM/GMing and that helped.

But not enough.

I've already sold about 90% of my game collection and I'm not even sad. Used that money to buy a nice camera.

However (and this is a BIG however) I thoroughly enjoy reading RPG books and posts along with listening to Actual Plays. So I doubt I'll drop out completely.

  1. Play lots of systems I have not played so far (preferably with different game/design philosophies).
  2. Try my hands at more extensive hacks of systems
  3. Consolidate my hobby shelf (PDF does the job for reading and referencing equally well if not better than printEd books)
  4. Hopefully find enough time to research and write a game book about a mythical Germany/Central Europe, either late renaissance or age of exploration era
  5. Have high expectations for 6e and be subsequently disappointed ;)

I'm going to run an urban 5E campaign and work on my expanded Social Interaction rules layer while I do it. I'm also going to try and branch out and play something other than D&D, although given the options available where I live that's harder than it sounds.

Going to stop DM'ing for a while and recharge. Kinda need to stop playing too but it is a rare connection to old friends.

RPGs take a lot of investment and DM'ing/playing because of habit can dull enjoyment too much. Need to see if my mojo comes back or not.

Ive decided to begin a year and a half two stage major project of designing an edition wide overhaul of 3/3.5 wherein i remove levels and create a way of playing d&d that mostly uses those rules but instead of levels a lot of the parts and the bits and pieces are broken down into chunks worth x xp where "x" has differing values depending on what you are buying. That will probably take a year to do well. Another half a year will be spent on working out the kinks and testing it for adjustments and changes needed.

That sounds a lot like "Buy the Numbers" an S.T. Cooley project that I bought years ago and is now available over at DrivethruRPG.com. It may give you some fuel or ideas for your project.
