Critical Role Wildemount: Most Pre-orders Since D&D Core Rulebooks

It seems that the most popular D&D setting in the 5E era is... Wildemount! Talking about the upcoming Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, WotC's Greg Tito said on a Twitch stream recently that "we're pretty sure that this book has seen the most pre-orders and pre-release excitement since any of the core rulebooks for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition were released".

Here's the quote in full:

"...It was number 1, ranked number 1, for all books on Amazon. How many of you out there remember when Amazon was just selling books? Raise your hands. Yeah, that's me. So it's really cool, even though obviously I do a lot more other fun stuff right now, there is a ton out there that are excited for this book, and it isn't even out yet.

"We have little bit of an internal metrics, but we're pretty sure that this book has seen the most pre-orders and pre-release excitement since any of the core rulebooks for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition were released, and if you've been following along at home, Dungeons & Dragons has been selling like hotcakes since 5th Edition released in 2014."

It sounds like the Critical Role setting is proving more popular (at least right now) than traditional D&D settings like Ravenloft or Eberron, newer ones like Ravnica, or adventures set in the Forgotten Realms.

Explorer's Guide to Wildemount will hit game stores on March 17th.

Don't worry because somebody has lied. Here in Spain there are lies everytype, and you can't imagine how fresh they can dare to be.

Greyhawk and the other most fantasy worlds aren't dead, but in a cellar as good wine. Their time hasn't arrived yet.

Ravenloft is perfect for adult players who don't want more dungeon-crawling but facing the monster of the weak. Ravenloft is a nice ghotic-horror seting but not too violent and enough suitable for teenages.

Dark Sun is a nice world, and it hasn't got old at all. But it is not ready for the crunch added in the last editions. I would like little pieces of crossover with Jakandor and Mystara Hollow World. Or a reboot of these last two as testing ersatz or spiritual succesors of Athas, being added in the DM Guild. Hollow World is perfect for a media tittle suitable for all publics, with dinosaurs, something like "hobbits in Jurasic Park". If I have suggest Jakandor is precisaly because if it isn't so popular then you can allow higher risks to test new ideas.

I would say there are plans for Kara-Tur and al-Quadin but we could listen complains abut the crunch, like "I want a shinobi from the hidden village of the leave" or "I want a shizoku (noble warrior or samurai) of the clan ki-rin". I guess the best time for the return of a-Quadim will be in the year of the Aladdin action-live sequel.

Greyhawk is a too important brand to be forgotten. Maybe WotC is negotiating with other people. Let's say this is in the pre-production phase.

The return of Planescape will be with a planar handbook, maybe a module compilation and a Torment II videogame.

Speaking of, I have finally watched my very first episode. I've only watched a few bits and pieces before and couldn't get into it. But I'm giving it a fresh go.

While watching, it seemed like Orion was on something the whole time. So I researched it, my suspicions seemed correct, and that whole story is just sad all around.

Yep. Which sucks even more because Tiberius is my wife and my favorite character in the first third or so of the show, until...around when they really get to a character’s personal story for the first time, right before he left.

I never bought it, but I've heard things about it the suggest it wasn't even originally intended to be for D&D never mind 5e, that only came up later.

I've played it, and I can say the story is very D&D, and Forgotten Realms, all the way through. The game engine may have originally been developed for a different game, but that is standard practice in the videogame industry.

The gameplay is deeply flawed, yes. But that's not why it is flawed.

Seriously I pretty mildly critcize WotC and I get the mob with torches and pitch fork treatment WTF.

What I have found is that certain words carry different connotations to people of different backgrounds. "lying" is one of those ("hate" is another). For some people to accuse someone of lying is to accuse them of a crime slightly worse than mass murder, however, to use a euphemism for lying makes it quite acceptable. The truth is everyone lies all the time, and usually for the best of reasons: "Did you like that jumper I knitted you?" "Oh, yes, it's lovely". It can make life difficult for those of us brought up to call a spade a spade (rather than uni-person earth moving apparatus).

That isn't true at all, I critized people who unfairly called other people sexists for critizing the nepotism that was involved in hiring Kate Welsh when she didn't meet WotCs own standards for qualification. And I have never critized any other female hirings at WotC at all, not even indirectly, I like Emi for example, I adore the writing of Erin M. Evans (btw), who I wish WotC would hire back, Elaine Cunningham and more.

I wasn't even going to weigh in on the Kate Welsh hire originally until I saw critics of the hire being slandered.

I have no ill will towards Kate Welsh, my issue was never really with her at all.

There are many great female game designers and fantasy writers in general.

I really resent the accusation against me honestly and I would like an apology as it wasn't true.

And I agree, we can all infer the interpretation that they were trying to send. And it is unethical to do so; but it is not by definition lying (though it is dishonest).

I'm Neutral on her, I have nothing against her, but she tends to get the products I'm not interested like Rick and Morty, so I'm not particularly interested or a fan either. That not an attack, or a judgement just an observation. I apologize for misspelling her name, but that is a reflection that I don't care about spelling in general as much as people would like, then anything about her.

Strange that you mentioned, "Rick and Morty" a minor starter box release and not the much more prominent Ghosts of Saltmarsh (which was in fact her first design job).

Simple reason, I didn't actually know that. Also a product I'm not interested in, although the couple of alternate backgrounds and background in it are well done (took a glance at it in Chapters).

I've heard it's well like by those interested in it, same with those interested in her other products, but I'll wait and see for myself when she does something I'm more interested in. I'm reasonably certain she will do fine.

It's easy enough to relocate the adventures to Forgotten Realms, I moved The Styles to Luskan myself, and the sizable section on ships and nautical adventures is useful for FR. It's only got one chapter that is seriously Greyhawky.
