D&D 4E Are powers samey?

Hell you can dislike any edition for whatever reason IMHO.
Oh, for sure. It's just that when someone claims "These 4e fighter powers feel too same-y to enjoy" but turns around and enjoys the all-the-same attacks of the fighter in 5e, then one wonders if there isn't some other reason they don't enjoy the game. This was @doctorbadwolf 's point above.

Wouldn't be particularly odd either; lots of people like Dan Ariely have pointed out through their research that we actually don't know our preferences all that well.

Format of powers is bad. The powers themselves are also disliked along with the build your own PC from a list of powers and feats.

5E you get to choose from prebuilt packages. Less moving parts. 4E formatting is terrible though.

I can deal with bad formatting (1E says hi) but what's underneath is important.

To be fair, judging by your interaction in this thread, I wouldn’t bother responding to such a challenge from you. Doesn’t seem like my replies would be treated with any respect or courtesy. 🤷‍♂️
I'm the one being told my opinions are not valid.
Since you stepped in, do you care to answer? I don't like 4E. I get it. I understand it. I don't care either way about presentation. I don't like it. Is that OK with you?
In case you missed all the times I said it already, I love that some people who love 4E can play it. I respect that 100% without question.

But seriously, this entire thread has been about an attempt to echo-chamber around misrepresenting people who didn't like 4E. Is there any respect or courtesy in insisting that others subjective opinions may only be described as a failure to "get it"?

Ok, see, those are fine complaints that don't have to do with same-y-ness of powers.

You don't like the formatting

You don't like the powers themselves (although really? All of them?)

You prefer fewer choices in making PCs.

Fair enough!

Fair to say then that 5E and 4E are interchangible?
Why don't we just all play 5E and then there is no need for this thread?

IMO that sells both games very short. I think they both have things they bring "to the table" that the other lacks.

Uh .... that's almost all criticism.

"I like this movie because of X."

"I dislike this car because of Y."

"I prefer this RPG because of A."

"I dislike that book because I can't color in it."

etc.

My point is that there is silliness in someone saying they dislike cats because they are furry but liking dogs and rabbits who are also furry .

Disliking "4e powers because they are samey" but liking 3e spells is not liking them for the reason stated. There is another aspect you have preference to.

The only way the "samey" argument works s if D&D had an edition where every class used a different susbsystem.

I appreciate this post. I've been observing the lack of anything like this.
We don't have to agree on all the details. If we can just get to "yep, that position is fair enough, even if I completely disagree", then that is all there is to it.

It is all relative.
You can go on all day about how completely different a fireball is compared to swinging a sword and having this or that completely un-fire-related special rider ability tied to said sword swing. And you would be right. But EVERY RPG (at least of those running for "being popular") can make that exact same case.
4E was all about "the math works". And no matter how long your list that EXACT SAME MATH was always there.

oh, wait....

I don't like the 4E power structure, powers, races, class design or healing surges which enable the 4E playstyle.

AEDU in a vacumn is fine and it's also fine on some classes or via class abilities and feats.

4E is also fine to mine for ideas. You could strip the guts if it out and use it to clone any edition of D&D.

For me it was advanced D&D minis the 3.5 minis game. But they kind of threw the baby out with the bath water.

What is the bolded part above?
