D&D 5E Have we rebalanced the Champion Yet?

I think if you lower the number of superiority dice that battlemasters may stop being worth playing over barbarians or paladins or maybe even rangers.

I just mean lowering the number in the beginning. Smoothing the progression so it isn't a 0 to 4 jump immediately at 3rd level.

So start with 2 and build up to 4 at 5th level?

It feels like a fast ramp up that way. The EK has a big power jump at 7th level when they get 2nd level spells, and that feels like a good place for the BM to start ramping up.

But, like others are saying, nerfing a non-caster class does feel a big bad. It's just they have more dice at 3rd level than a monk has ki! LOL

You also must look at ranger and paladin and barbarian. Paladins ramp up at 5th (2nd level spells for divine smites). Rangers do as well (hunter's mark applies to all attacks). Barbarian reckless applies to all attacks.

Also Battlemasters and Monks actually come out very closely in damage if you look at the all in numbers. Especially considering flurry of blows ramps up every level and the bonus action unarmed attack is amazing at levels before extra attack.

Action surge provides a similar ramp up for Fighters at 5th.

Monk, QS and fist.
Base is 1d8+1d4+2dex
Ki is worth 1d4+dex; get 1 Ki/short rest/level
Level 5 is 1d8+dex and +1d6-1d4 on both MA and Flurry.

Fighter, dex, TWF, BM.
Base is 2d6+2dex
Level 2 is +1d6+dex/SR
Level 3 is +4d8/rest
Level 5 is +1d6+dex/turn + 1d6+dex/rest

So at 5 we get with 18 dex
3d6+3dex (22.5)/turn + 2d6+2dex+4d8 (33)/rest on BM
on monk:
2d8+1d6+3dex (24.5)/turn + 5d6+5dex (37.5)/rest on Monk (no subclass)

At 3 w 16 dex
2d6+2dex (13)/turn + 1d6+dex+4d8 (24.5)/rest on BM
1d8+1d4+2dex (13)/turn + 3d4+3dex (16.5)/rest on Monk

Now, monk Open Hand abilities aren't bad (I'd say a touch better status effects than BM; they can force 6 dex-or-prone saves/SR, vs BM has 4), but the gap isn't as large as above.

One idea is to give d6 dice, upgrading to d8s at level 5. That reduces the damage spike a little bit.

Curious why you compared the highest damage low level fighter to a monk not even using a quarterstaff 2 handed?

She is using it 2H - hence d8s. Unarmed strikes start as d4s, upgrade to d6s at level 5. So 2d8+2dex (QS) + 1d6+dex (martial arts), spend a Ki for +1d6+dex (5 pts/rest).

Fighter is DW short swords. So 3d6+3dex base (TWF style). 4d8 BM dice/rest, and 2d6+2dex action surge/rest.

Nobody has feats (feats help fighter more).
