D&D 5E Character for new campaign

The party is 4 players. Three players have chosen their class: Wizard, Druid, Monk. We are all Aasimar (can still pick the subrace). DM imposed that the group all be the same race but that we could pick the race. Character creation will be done by standard array only. I'm looking for some inspiration. So what character would you make?

Also, there are a few house rules.

0 HP and Dying:
You don't die at 0 hp. You instead start to take death saves upon being hit (2 upon taking a critical).
Massive damage is now equal to half of your maximum HP.
While at 0 HP an enemy can choose to knock you unconscious instead of dealing damage.

Backgrounds
PHB backgrounds are out. Instead pick Skills, Equipment or Spells.

Skills give 3 skills and expertise in 2 of your class skills.

Equipment gives gear that provide damage and ac bonuses and improves shields.

Spells function similar to magic initiate except you go up to 1st, 2nd and 3rd level spell at 5th level and can cast each once per day. You also learn 1 cantrip. Same restriction on class and casting stat as magic initiate feat.

What sort of character would you like to play?

Are you starting from level 1, and do you know what subclasses the other party members are?
Bladesinger Wizard, Moon druid and Open hand Monk are going to cover fairly different roles compared to Evoker, Land Druid and 4 radiant soul monk for example.

Setting aside classes for a second. If it were likely that the other players were going to be playing pretty upright characters, I might go the Avengers route and design something a little more Loki and a little less Captain America. Not evil, but something a little more sly.

What's the stat generation method?

Edit: standard array - apparently reading comprehension before morning coffee is hard!

Personally for this group, my choice would be a paladin or a zealot barbarian.

Take The skills option to cover some blind spots, though the spells option seems the mechanically strongest of the 3.

Hmm...standard array with fixed race is tough, if you don't go for a Cha class, you're going to have some suboptimal stats in Con or your AC stat.

My first thought was to use the free Magic Initiate+ to grab shillelagh and go arcana cleric. You can start with 16 Wis and grab some fun druid spells.

My other thought is to take advantage of the AC bonuses from Equipment and build a high AC tank. Paladin seems like the obvious choice here, and fits the race.

great questions

we start at level 1. No one has picked a subclass yet.

I don’t know what sort of character I would like to play. Thus the thread.

thanks for the thoughts. I should have mentioned it’s a featless game.
