A Title Much Cooler Than Anything on the Old Site
Well, when I played DnD there were no websites. Started playing again when 5e came out. So the WotC site is the only one I ever used for DnD. Can't remember the last time I bother to visit the site though. I get my DnD news from DnD Beyond, Dragon+, and ENWorld.
Still, it costs so little to maintain a domain, that I don't understand giving it up.

I do find it hard to understand the outcry over the equivalent of re-issuing a phone number.

It would have made more sense if they had gotten a nice offer from someone/company that wanted to use that domain name. Since the domain is up for grabs, though, it is weird.

As a note to younger members of our hobby, let me The OP say there is zero outrage over this. Just some sadness. I’m grateful WoTC/Hasbro kept the domain redirect active for as long as they did.
As far was not understanding the sentimentality, know that you are but the latest in a long line of nerds interested in D&D. Some day you may find yourself sentimental about odd nerdy things too. Heck, I still have some of my original dice from the 1978 Basic Box (the blue one with the dragon on it). Those dice look like crap compared to my other dice. But to me they are priceless. I certainly never thought some stupid domain name was so important to me until yeasterday when it failed me.
May you find your crap dice and stupid domain name. I sincerely hope that for you. D&D is a great hobby. It has given a lot to me which I am very greatful for.

It looks like a couple posters didn't get that memo.
Eh, I started in 86, so I'm not significantly younger than you. I have pleny of nostalgia for the D&D of yesteryear, many of the old products, and even for TSR itself (even if it were post-Gygax). I still don't understand the sentimentality over a domain name, but I guess everyone's got their thing.

I'm right there with you. I was sad when TSR went under even though I had stopped playing AD&D a few years before. In fact, I had sold almost my entire RPG collection which consisted of a lot of 2nd edition books, TSR's Marvel Super Heroes, and various editions of Gamma World. I too have a lot of fond memories of days gone by and while I am old enough to understand the inexorable march of time will consume us all, I sometimes miss those carefree gaming days. So I get where you're coming from.

I am still a little upset when I call my parents and have to dial 651 instead of 612 (both Twin Cities area codes).
When I was in New York I made sure my cell phone number had a 212 area code. No way I was going to settle for 332, 646, or--heaven forbid--917.
I think my parents are still upset that they have to use area codes at all.
