Having played the Hexblade to 14th so far, I took Thirsting Blade as as soon as I could get it. I'm considering replacing it though. Character has Greenflame Blade and ofted uses the cast a spell action to do greenflame blade once instead. The d8s add damage and if he's attacking in melee, he's often doing eldritch smite. Add to that, he's got plenty of gold to make stuff and if he adds the Illusory Bracers from Ravnica, he'll be able to cast Greenflame blade again as a bonus action. Thirsting blade will work with both, and at this point, it's worthwhile to do.

Often doing Eldritch Smite? With only 3 spell slots?

I played a Hexblade for a good while too, and found that Eldritch Smite was not worthwhile for me. I was doing more damage with Hex and Armor of Agathys. Further, I was finding as I passed 7th level that my spells being used to increase damage was inefficient and I could get more bang for my buck (most often) with hypnotic pattern, banishment or other spells. I often resorted to Thirsting Blade Dual Melee attacks (When augmented by Lifedrinker they did decent damage), but not spell augmented.

Past level 7, shadow of moil combined with elven accuracy and the 19-20 critical hit range? Use the advantage of the Shadow of Moil to crit-fish (you're essentially rolling 6 d20 in a round) Your chance of landing at least one crit are pretty high. Then smite :D

Then take a one-hour rest after every battle, over and again.

Typically, bonus action Hexblade's curse, then either eldritch blast or if advantage can be had then greenflame blade. Spend a 5th level slot to smite. 3 slots a short rest means that most often, I can get at least one in. If smite isn't effective, or if it's not a good idea to go melee, then EB or Invisibility on multiple allies.

Seriously speaking though... I think that the hexblade runs out of steam too fast, and that the hexblade has to focus too much on swordfighting to keep up with other melee warriors. A dip in fighter can really help (action surge, better armor, more HP, second wind...)
