D&D 5E What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

A dwarf is a dwarf. Experience after that may differ, but the base mechanics for the race are the same. They start at 1 hit die, with the same racial bonuses, and the same base speed, and the same creature type, and...
Not according to the Monster Manual statblocks for guard, mage, acolyte, etc...

Example: Thug gets pack tactics. No PC race gets that.
Example2: Guard has ability stats of 13, 12, 12, 10, 11, 10 - that's not the same as a PC of any race

If you notice, I didn't include the centaur abilities in the mechanical changes, either. Training explains those differences.

The only thing which bothers me is size. I get that it's mechanically easier to cleave to the idea that all player characters are Medium, but I'm pretty sure my table can handle a little bit of napkin math to accommodate a Large character.

But you specifically pointed out an issue with the NPC/monster Centaur having a different ability score line than the PC Centaur. Do you withdraw that objection when it comes to dwarven guards/acolytes/mages/etc?

Those NPCs are somewhat different than the centaur. They aren't the same as a full monster version. The NPCs get built similar to how a similar level PC would advance. With not only racial bonuses assumed, but ASIs as well. The centaur is not built like a class as it's a monster.

It has choice weapons and a fighting style. I think it's safe to assume that the Centaur in the Manual is a warrior class.

You must have a different MM than I do. I don't see fighting style or choice of weapons. It has a pike and a longbow and gets +6 with the pike, 4 from strength and 2 from proficiency. Then +4 with the bow, 2 from dex and 2 from proficiency.

Apologies, I meant to use the more general meaning for Fighting Style, not the fighter class ability. I'd still argue that the Centaur enemy has access to a special "Centaur Warrior" class which the players do not have access to. Maybe it increases strength with training, et cetera. I see no issue here.

Look, on the hill, two humans. Andre the Giant and Peter Dinklage. Clearly the same so no need to worry about different rules in my game world.

Look, on the hill, two centaurs, Monster Manual and Ravnica. Clearly two alien species from one another, no way could I have a PC be one and an NPC be the other without upsetting the world order.
