If this query is based on my example for designing a monster, that was totally arbitrary and not meant to suggest a number or even specific style of ingredient.

I concur that for rounds with two categories there should be three for each OR six total that they can break up how they want btwn them (2 minimum).
Sorry, this was meant to be a response to @Wicht and his formal plan.

I think if we have a set of 15 Shared Ingredients, we can have contestants choose 3 for each week (knowing the themes of upcoming weeks, to plan ahead - ultimately every contestant will have to use 12 out of these 15 ingredients), and then we judges can add 3 ingredients to that list that all contestants have to add for that week, for a total of 6 ingredients to split between two entries (1000 word total).

e: This has the benefit of a 3-judge panel introducing an even number of ingredients, both to the master list and the weekly shared ingredients

When we've got a rough frame worked out, we should do a pass for clarity, and scratch out anything that makes it unnecessarily complex without bringing much to the table. You know, like we do with our entries!

This query is not directly related to this project we're working on, but I have a question maybe you guys can help me with.

One of the most difficult part of archiving the IRON DM tournaments is that there is no set format for entries or judgements or consistent names for the rounds.

Right now in my archiving I am labeling the rounds as follows
  • Round One - Match One through Four
  • Round Two - Match One and Two
  • Final Round - Championship Match

When there was a special final final round when the previous IRON DM got to face off against the new winner (I think this happened twice) I call it "IRON DM OF ENWORLD SPECIAL"

But when there is a third place match I want a name that fits with the first three I listed. The problem is sometime it takes place before the final round and sometimes it take place after - so calling it the third round or fourth round could be confusing. I would call it the "Semi-Final Round" except some judges have referred to Round Two that way (which is technically correct),, though others have called it as such.

Right now I am just calling it "Third Place Match" but that does not fit the format of numbering the rounds (rather than describing its outcome.

According to the "official" nomenclature of single-elimination tournaments (and I know at least one tournament I ran had a double-elimination final) the rounds should be:
  • Quarter Final Round (8)
  • Semi-Final Round (4)
  • Final (or Championship) Round (2)
  • Third Place Play-Offs (losers of Semi-Final)

Anyone have thoughts suggestions for naming the rounds consistently?

In our most recent contest, after thought about this very question I believe I labeled them Round 3, Third Place Match; and Round 3, Championship Match. I thought doing so made it clear enough as to what was what.

Hmm, I have been archiving them as separate rounds, but this just may work. I guess it doesn't matter what order they were played in in reality, I can always put the 3rd place play-off match before the final match and call them the same round.

Correcting an entry in which every use of "their" is spelled "there," while perhaps an easy mistake to make, is annoying to fix because I am sure I missed a couple.

Archiving Update: Finished IRON DM Summer 2003 (won by moi!) and starting on IRON DM Fall 2003 (judged by Pielorinho - whatever happened to Daniel? I liked that guy), in which Wulf would go from alternate to champion and still find a way to complain. 🤷‍♂️ :ROFLMAO: ;)
