“You Only Rise From The Void as a Slathering Death God Twice” by Nifft (from IRON DM Fall 2003) has got to be an honorable mention for best title, too.

This query is not directly related to this project we're working on, but I have a question maybe you guys can help me with.

One of the most difficult part of archiving the IRON DM tournaments is that there is no set format for entries or judgements or consistent names for the rounds.

Right now in my archiving I am labeling the rounds as follows
  • Round One - Match One through Four
  • Round Two - Match One and Two
  • Final Round - Championship Match

When there was a special final final round when the previous IRON DM got to face off against the new winner (I think this happened twice) I call it "IRON DM OF ENWORLD SPECIAL"

But when there is a third place match I want a name that fits with the first three I listed. The problem is sometime it takes place before the final round and sometimes it take place after - so calling it the third round or fourth round could be confusing. I would call it the "Semi-Final Round" except some judges have referred to Round Two that way (which is technically correct),, though others have called it as such.

Right now I am just calling it "Third Place Match" but that does not fit the format of numbering the rounds (rather than describing its outcome.

According to the "official" nomenclature of single-elimination tournaments (and I know at least one tournament I ran had a double-elimination final) the rounds should be:
  • Quarter Final Round (8)
  • Semi-Final Round (4)
  • Final (or Championship) Round (2)
  • Third Place Play-Offs (losers of Semi-Final)

Anyone have thoughts suggestions for naming the rounds consistently?
I can’t imagine the headache you’ll have when you get to the round-robin tournament!

While the original judgement this is from is lost to time and unstable boards, I am glad I quoted it during a 2003 tourney because it is hilarious

I've said it before, but my favorite reply to a round as an IRON DM JUDGE was "Man, It is entries like these that make me wish I could eliminate the both of you." ;)

Sorry to keep harping on this - but I don't think this game can be even remotely fair with opponents using different ingredients - especially considering how it is typically judged, not to mention that some sets of ingredients are inherently more difficult than others even when chosen to be of equal difficulty of other match-ups of the same round.

Wicht in reply said:
I gotta agree. If its not in the rules it oughta be. Same ingredients or none at all.

BTW, I obviously have not finished going through all the tournaments, but based on what I have done so far and assuming he didn't take any really long breaks, I would bet money that @Wicht has written more IRON DM entries than anyone else. I could be wrong but that's why it's called betting.

Forgive me for spamming this thread, it is a slow day for me as I await some news and need a distraction, but anyway. .. as I have been going through the old tournaments I have been taking the opportunity to check the profiles of the old regulars to see if they might be still around and when the last time they were seen on the boards might be.

I checked on @mythago this way and saw she'd been on the boards as recently as September 2020. Has she taken part in any of the recent past IRON DMs?

Doing this archiving reinforces for me how male dominant the boards and thus this contest tends to be - so I was wondering about the handful of women who've played over the years.
