Successful =/= best.
Perhaps not, but by being the most succesful edition implies that it is the most popular edition. There is no "best" but you might be able to argue that 5e is the "most-liked."

Personally I'm off the Matt Colville mindset. You like an edition until you don't. It's great when its new and eventually you burn out on it and want something fresh.* I've played 5e since it released and thought it was the best D&D ever. Now I chafe at often poor/boring monster design and lack of player options (relative to other games.) Pathfinder 2e has been tempting me by improving on both but that system has its own issues so I hear.

*This doesn't apply to everyone naturally. Many people settle into a specific game. You see this a lot in OSR circles.

Of course we all have our preferred editions. But I think that the way we talk about them is important. Whenever we launch into the story of, “I play XYZ games because reasons,” we’re talking about what we prefer, not what is objectively best. It’s about finding the right game for the right person, not about finding the right game period. That’s why, when it comes time to compare systems, I always try to speak in terms of “this edition delivers on these design goals,” not “this other edition is trash because it doesn’t do all the things I want.” There's no "best" version of D&D. Just the one that's best for you.

That is all. Soapbox dismounted.

(Comic for illustrative purposes.)
I disagree a bit. Different editions are better/worse at creating certain vibes or a certain feel in play, and people’s preferences vary, so they prefer different editions. So there are better editions for dungeon survival horror and better editions for combat as war, and better editions for combat as sport, etc. But agreed that there is no best edition, only best editions for certain preferences.

It's best to play a game that has only one edition. Then you can fight with rules lawyers! 🙃
Don't drag rules lawyers into this. Edition warring is one of the things that could get you disbarred.

Was the arrow one of those old school 1d6 damage ones or one of those fancy, more modern d8 damage sheaf arrow ones?

Well, I don't know if it got through or not, but the one I shot was a Singing Arrow (1d2 dmg, Tales of the Lance) which makes a loud sound, but probably won't kill.
