Perhaps not, but by being the most succesful edition implies that it is the most popular edition. There is no "best" but you might be able to argue that 5e is the "most-liked."Successful =/= best.
Personally I'm off the Matt Colville mindset. You like an edition until you don't. It's great when its new and eventually you burn out on it and want something fresh.* I've played 5e since it released and thought it was the best D&D ever. Now I chafe at often poor/boring monster design and lack of player options (relative to other games.) Pathfinder 2e has been tempting me by improving on both but that system has its own issues so I hear.
*This doesn't apply to everyone naturally. Many people settle into a specific game. You see this a lot in OSR circles.
