  • None. I hate the outer planes. And inner planes more.

Most of the planes are too dangerous for low level PCs, and they are practically open sandboxes where DM can add lots of ideas. I wonder about to allow demiplanes could be explored and setttled by ordinary mortals, or at least thanks refugees built with a super-advanced technology (an alien spaceship crashed in D&D, when has been seen anything like this?).

The Lovecraftian cosmic-horror Far Realm needs be described with more details.

Have we now reached a point in popular culture where the genuinely new is unthinkable?
Apparently.

I mean, seriously if you look at TV and movies it really looks that way. There are still new novels because I guess someone has to provide source material and test if it's any good, and weirdly Apple TV is still coming out with original series more than adaptations, but mostly it's just adaptation or sequel or revival or reboot.

But yeah I'd love to see a totally original/new setting, preferably written by someone under 40, like most of these settings were back in the day.
Good point - and interesting the ones they expanded on most were the two most game-able ones and oddly the Elemental Chaos which is dumb because they should have gone Feywild as you say. I imagine they would have if 4E kept going.

man, I should write a setting.
Being serious, you should! It doesn’t have to be super-detailed and you can grow it over time as you get new or refine your existing ideas.

I’d be curious to see what, we - as Enworld posters - would come up with if we were to rebuild the outer planes from scratch, maybe with each of us taking on a plane or two.

Though I have to admit I have a very, very hard time seeing past the Great Wheel cosmology.

well what are the points of the planes and what must we have as a start?

been debating making a setting at some point with my typical taste in madness.

Well, for planes, it must somehow be different than the “prime” plane. Most existing planes are sources of material and/or power (such as Earth/Fire/Air/Water/Positive/Negative/Far Realm) or the final resting place of the dead and/or home of the gods/fiends(all the Outer Planes of the Great Wheel). Sometimes they are amplified reflections of portions of the material plane (Feywild/Shadowfell). In a few cases, they may simply be “different” (Ravenloft/Dungeonland).

It’s really wide open and becomes what you want it to be. If you’re not sure, I’d start with a plane that is the source of magic, a positive afterlife and a negative afterlife and a side realm that accounts for some of the setting’s monstrous inhabitants. The latter gives you a place where you can put weird expeditions and quests to interact with creatures/races that you might not normally meet in the setting.

no, I mean what choices have been made for use assuming we at minimum build for the monster manual?

If I am understanding correctly, I guess that would be a place for celestials, fiends, and elementals. It could be further expanded for aberrations, undead and possibly monstrosities. You could do planes for other types such as giants, or even certain humanoids (elves and other fey come to mind).

I'd really rather the planes and the afterlife be different things.

Instead, the planes could instead be reflections of the Prime based on themes. So you get Fire World of course, but also Machine World and Hengeyokai World and Undead World and the World The Was Nothing but Shrimp, Since Destroyed by the Cocktails Sauce Incursion.

Personally, I’d consider those “alternate primes”, but they are a form of planes.

I hadn’t thought of disconnecting the “outer planes” from an afterlife, but that would be an interesting take. Would alter the nature of demons and devils, to be sure.
