TUW: The Outpost

Waynan

Adventurer
Raven Elk comes to appreciate the fetish of the Bear and what it implies for himself and how it can help his friends, also, in future events.
As he pondered this new aspect of self, he fell into a moment's deep reverie, mere seconds in real time, but, long minutes in his recall ---

He was 8 again, and beginning to learn Ma's trade as an herbalist and some hedge sorcerer alchemy, when he asked her out of pure curiosity:
"What was I like as a baby?"

"Why do you ask, my son?" she queried back.

"I don't know. Ma. There's just this thing inside me that wants to know things --- no, not just things, but about people, places, The Outpost, you, my friends --- and me."

"Well," she smiled at her him. He remembered how she always has had a nice smile; not one of those smiles that was pasted on to give a good impression. It was genuine. "I'm glad we have a lot of work today. Talking about raising you from a babe will be a pleasant way to pass the time."

Ma was always open about letting Raven Elk know she wasn't her real mother, that he was Kinamin, an overtly vicious and violent people who was left behind after a Thisidabogan troop raided and overthrew a Kinamin force of warriors with their kin in tow, Not wanting to kill him, for he was but a mere newborn of 6 months or less, they brought him to The Outpost where the old Healer and her apprentice, Ma, took him in. For Ma, as she always says with a teary glint of joy in her eyes, he was her heart from that moment on.
The other thing that she remembers, vividly and wonderingly, is that Raven Elk was such a calm baby. Rarely fussing or wailing as most babies are wont to do, Raven Elk would cry when hungry or wet, but it was different. Even when he was a mere tot, she would say that Raven Elk never raged and railed, instead, she could see him fume with a dark fire, but one that was always, or nearly always, in firm and fierce control until Raven Elk was ready to unleash it on an opponent. It was very UN-Kinamin like in that the Kinamin were frenzied and chaotic fighters at all times. Ma always considered this the wisest way to deal with one's trials and challenges.
It was why Ma named him Raven Elk in the first place. His wise control of his inner passions reminded her of an Elk she had seen once, as a child herself, stand so still and patiently for so long, when a cougar was stalking about for prey, that a Raven graced its antlers by landing to rest on them as if on any snag. The wise Raven recognized the wisdom of the Elk, normally a totem of grace, agility and diligence, to stay as still as the oak and the maple, until the threat of certain death had passed. It was for this reason that, on his christening day, at aged 6, when all children get there permanent name, that she chose Raven Elk; for, she saw that same qualities of the Elk, well maybe not the agility so much, and the wisdom of keeping his own counsel as the Raven and only dispensing it at the opportune moment.

"She says I have the heart of the Healer, but the mind and soul of the Shaman." Raven Elk mused as he came out of his reverie. "She may be right; especially now with this new connection with the totem of the Bear."

Raven Elk...
Taylar... has each of them practice starting a fire on their own.
Taylar: 51(coerce) + 25(muddle) + 87(d100) = 163
Girls: 40(skepticism) + 15(clarity) + 59(d100) = 114
The girls initially balk at the idea that they can manipulate waylines. This is blasphemous to them. It goes against the lies they have been sold since childhood, but they are used to being forced to take orders. It is a pattern of behavior that will take some time to change. They do not realize that the three men will not hurt them for failing at a task or displaying reservation, only violence is reciprocated with violence.

All of the girls can, in fact, make fire. They are surprised at the finding. It is a hard concept because it is so significantly different than their indoctrinated ideology, but they begin to realize that the power to alter reality through will comes from within not without.

The group reaches Refuge without incident. The girls earning more trust from the Outliers and offering more respect in return. When Vittero comes out to meet everyone, the girls instinctively drop to a knee, diverting their eyes to the ground. They fear they have been subjected to some test in which they have failed. They could not be more wrong.

Vittero is dressed in the vestige of a priest of Dawn. He has two younger acolytes trailing him. The town appears to not only be recovering but beginning to prosper.

"Stand to you feet. There will be none of that here in Refuge. You are traveling with my friends. You are welcome here. You likely already have some training that will make you all valuable assets to the Perimeter Guard. I will introduce you to Maka who is in charge of that unit; but for today, let me offer you rest and refreshment."

Once the girls are safely out of the care of the Outliers, Vittero desires to speak with his friends and hear about what they have discovered. He also will explain the presence of the acolytes as well as a few Cathedral soldiers in uniform. Despite the odd mixture of people milling about, nothing looks or feels wrong about the town.

Taylar meets with Vittero and the other Outliers to discuss their trip and the location of the training camp. He tells of the encounter with the Markidian and how he attacked on sight of a Maldrog. "The girls we brought back did not want to fight without just cause, which is why we knew we could save them from indoctrination. There was one girl who we had to incapacitate, and we left her behind."
After the meeting with Vittero, Taylar goes to any leather worker in town and orders a new set of tunics for the new recruits. He goes to the girls and invites them to burn their old tunics in full view of the community. "It is a necessary ceremony to show that you have left your old lives of strife and pain behind, and are ready to embrace life with joy and compassion. There will always be hardships from people or nature, but love for your fellow people, despite their differences, is not weakness. In fact, love is the strongest bond I know of. You may make your own symbols to decorate your clothes if you so choose, but always remember a symbol only has the power that we give it."

Taylar meets... goes to any leather worker... invites...
Adisakti looks for a leather worker, as well. He hopes to have find a replacement for his ruined tunic. He also speaks with the others about keeping the odd, bronze colored sword.
Taylar: 51(coerce) + 25(muddle) + 68(d100) = 144
With the nature of such a public display, there is always a risk of uninvolved observers to get the wrong impression. Taylar's words go a long way to prevent that from happening. Vittero listen to what is said and then expounds upon it for the benefit of his two students and the locals who have gathered to watch. He hopes that this all bolsters the idea that Refuge is a place to stand for its name.

The party learns that the clan of Rheini, of which Maka is a member, have moved from Outpost to Refuge. It is the Rheini who offer their services for leather work, and there is a newly opened shop for such commercial business. Common tunics of light leather can be made for anyone in question for 60 marks, each, but there is not enough raw material for so many. There is currently only enough leather to make a tunic for Adisakti and another for one of the girls. It is communicated that Barking Squirrel will be happy to complete the items when enough material is collected. In the mean time, the girls have clothing, but it is not protective.
OOC: 120 marks has been deducted for the two purchased items.

In some private time, Vittero speaks with his friends and explains that while Cathedral soldiers seem to have replaced Kingdom soldiers in the general duties of kingdom protectorate, no further trouble has been noticed or reported. The resident soldiers answer to his authority and have shown themselves to be friendly and helpful with the other townspeople, of any tribe. The one unit of Daughter's of Dawn that the Outliers spared, still reports to Vittero when they pass through town, but they are not under his command. He did, however, have the symbol on their armor corrected, and nothing untoward had yet come of it. He takes the training ledger to see if he can discern any useful information from it.

"So here is the hidden malevolence as I am understanding it. Someone within the Cathedral is having young girls kidnaped and their families killed. These girls are held in captivity and conditioned to withstand abuse, though fortunately not sexual. A group of six girls is then trained together in hidden locations, being subjected to indoctrination and likely more abuse. You have eliminated one captor and one trainer. Obviously there must be more captors than trainers. All of these need to be eliminated. I have no idea who is behind this but it must be one of the members of the College of Philosophers."

"The Divine Praetor is just a spokesperson, a face, chosen by the eight Sages, and he is not chosen from among the eight. My money is on one of the Sages being subversive, but he will be extremely smart and extremely dangerous. I think you should continue to whittle away at his pawn until the man behind the veil is forced to show his hand."

Adisakti speaks with the others about keeping the odd, bronze colored sword.
Taylar agrees Adisakti should keep the sword.
Taylar takes the lack of material for new tunics as a challenge. He does not order a tunic for any of the girls, but says to them, "This is a perfect time for a hunting trip. We will not return to Refuge until we have enough hide to fashion tunics for all of you."
After a night's rest, Taylar takes enough provisions for the hunting trip and intends to set out with the new recruits for a likely spot to hunt for good materials.

Liking the idea of a hunting challenge, some of the members of the Rheini clan, which includes Maka, wish to get involved. They discuss the intentions of the Outliers so that both groups will travel in a different direction. Since the Outliers still have a canoe in Refuge and little is known about the area across the river, they choose to cross. The Rheini hunting party will travel northeast, toward the plains.

Refuge is near the bay and the river is never as clear here as it is only a little further upstream, due to the movement of the tide. It takes almost half an hour just to cross which drift the boat farther southward. The canoe is beached and then carried inland to be somewhat concealed, as an instinctual precaution. With the Sioliri village known to be to the south, the group heads northward, keeping within sight of the river.

Within the first few hours of travel, Raven Elk first notices a small herd of Piney Wood Rooters, which are medium peccaries. Each can provide enough meat for four meals and a thin leather hide for up to 20% coverage. The men quickly fell three using their innate talent to manipulate waylines, which spooks the rest of the herd.

Adisakti discovers a path regularly used by lacquered ants. The insects are a minor threat to people but of no real consequence to the Outliers. It is decided to ignore the ants and move on.

In the late afternoon, a roving band of Shimadows thinks to ambush the party by launching javelins from the hidden location. Before the first javelin can be loosed, Taylar stares directly in the face of one of the hidden foes, drawing his bludgeons in a menacing posture. The one Shimadow lowers his javelin and says some quick words of retreat. The band, each member of which realizes that he is not hidden, heeds the words and departs. They will likely attempt to move as far away from the Outliers as possible before making their own camp for the night.

At camp, Adisakti says, "Not a bad first day. We have these three peccaries to proccess. Do we want to continue to follow the river northward, tomorrow?"

After some discussion, following the river seems the most logical. It will be easier to track direction and, like people, game needs water. Despite this, the next day proves much less fruitful. The only game encountered is comprised of thrushes and groundhogs.

Adisakti comments, "A bad run of luck we had this day. I don't know if we make too much noise or we are just poor hunters."

Taylor smiles and says, "The lack of other game might mean there are bigger predators around. Perhaps we will find something special in this area." He invites his recruits to thoroughly search the area for signs of larger predators.
