D&D 5E Ray Winninger mentions third project!

WotC's Ray Winninger has confirmed that another D&D release, by James Wyatt, will be released in between Witchlight (September) and Strixhaven (November). Strixhaven was Amanda Hamon's project, while Witchlight is Chris Perkins'. That assumes he's not referring to the Feywild accessory kit in September.

A lot of people are asking Qs about the [D&D] releases for the rest of this year.

Yes, WILD BEYOND THE WITCHLIGHT is the [Chris Perkins] story product I referenced in our dev blog. STRIXHAVEN is [Amanda Hamon's] project. We have not yet announced [James Wyatt's] project, which releases between WITCHLIGHT and STRIXHAVEN.

Why did we announce STRIXHAVEN so early? Pretty simple--there was no way to release the STRIX-related Unearthed Arcana without letting the cat out of the bag.

You'll learn a lot more about all of these products at D&D Live on G4, July 16 and 17. And yes, there is still a little surprise or two ahead.

Already back - they're called Variant Tieflings. They've been in since Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. :)
SCAG variant tieflings are a pitiful excuse for "diverse" tieflings compared to the tieflings of the Planewalker's Handbook to the point I don't know how you could in good faith consider them "already back", and 2/3 of the mutually exclusive SCAG variants are still of the painfully bland WotC-era Halloween-Costume-Devil type.

There's nothing close to the 1d100 of tiefling traits we once had anywhere to be seen, nor is there anything supporting actually diverse types of tieflings (i.e., tieflings with demonic, yugoloth, or night hag heritage), as all 5e tieflings are—characteristically of WotC-era D&D—depicted to be homogenous in their heritage and racial background, with any deviation from that background being an abnormal "variant", as opposed to the original and diverse tieflings of the setting they originated in, where diverse backgrounds and deviation from the norm are what defines tieflings.

Not to mention the diversity of the other planetouched: in the Planewalker's Handbook, half-dwarves are the most common earth genasi, while post-Planescape, everything is exclusively half-human. I'd be pretty surprised to see anything with a similar approach to the original Planescape in a setting published today, as planars—described as incapable of making moral and ethical choices in the 5e Player's Handbook rather than the result of them, magically changing in race should they change in alignment—have become the new outlet for corporate racism, and it will only stop if it's deemed unprofitable.

My guess is that it is almost certainly not Planescape (or Planesjammer), and very likely to be something dragon related. Planescape would expand the D&D universe in a way unprecedented in 5E's run, and would be entirely new to the bulk of current players, so would likely require an "easing in," as well as multiple products. I think it will happen eventually, just not in October. Probably 2022 or 2023.

Dragons...it is just too obvious not to be true. Now whether that is some form of Draconomicon or a dragons-based setting like Dragonlance or Council of Wyrms, remains to be seen. I could also see them doing something different, or a Draconomicon with several "micro-settings" within it.

Just want to say, that although there should be a third setting coming as per Winninger's tweets, I doubt it's the Wyatt project. That would make three settings released in a year... which seems like too many. More likely to me that it will come next year.

So I'm thinking dragon book, like most folks on this thread.

As for what the third setting is... Dragonlance or Planescape. Maybe Planejammer, but that seems like a ton of content that they could easily milk for two separate books.
