Currently that would be my 5e valor bard, so at 1st level a healing word and feather fall spell if needed in emergencies and at will prestidigitation would be used. I would not expect to need to use vicious mockery.

I don't expect the 5e background pirate being an intimidating jerk power would come up either in most situations.

Granting Bardic Inspiration would be nice in general.

I would keep it quiet unless I was in a situation where first aid was immediately needed or someone was falling. Even then I'd keep my mouth shut about it as much as I could.

Hm. Two characters come to mind. One is technically a larp character, but I say phooey to the arbitrary tabletop limitation!

Both are human, so there's no issue with physical changes.

One's basically a technological genius. In game, his work eventually becomes the basis of a sort of second Renaissance. Under current context, cranking out a whole lot of alternative energy technology would likely have the same effect. No real need to be secret about it. He does make a few items that defy normal physics, but those he keeps to his person, and he can get away with calling them prototypes, and nobody'd be the wiser. Beating people up wasn't a thing he did unless absolutely necessary, so no need to go all Caped Crusader.

The other was from White Wolf Mage, so keeping his power use largely down to events considered coincidental is part and parcel with his normal operation. He originated as a journalist that turned ovre rocks major corporations would prefer remained unturned, but the point was to publish, so not really staying secret there, either.

I'm inclined to disagree. A half-elf might be able to pass for Human if their ears weren't too long. (I've seen some people who could pose as half-elves, IMO.)
If you look significantly different from your original self, how do you get papers and other background documentation that other people have.

You are assuming that the only real differential between a half elf and human is the ears? what if there are more dramatic differences? but the loss of access to papers would be the biggest problem. Your existing documentation is no good. At the very least you would have to conduct a law case to prove you are you.
Could you even persuade your relatives?

Good points.

That is a good point, but this is something that may or may not be that much of a problem depending on where you are, and how "paperless"* you can be. Though in same places it will be extremely difficult. For example here in Sweden we have a thing called Personnummer** (equivalent to the US social security number), and that is used for example whenever you have to deal with the authorities in one way or the other, and it will be used when you get a job, as the employer has to pay taxes and social fees for employing you, and you need a bank-account.

* Refering to documents that support your identity. May or may not be in physical form.

** supposed to be unique, but due to a bad design in only using 2 digits for birth-year, you do end up now and again with 106 year olds being called to school. These are also gendered, and can be changed after you have completed a sex-change. The format is YYMMDD-NNNN, where the 3rd N reflects wether male or female, and the 4rth is a checksum-digit. The Dash changes to a + when you are 100 years old. Older systems often omitt it (most people are not aware that it has a meaning), and newer ones skip the dash but use 4 digits for year instead.

Some people seem to have missed the part about starting at level 1. As for me, I don't really have a favorite character. More of a favorite type. (Some healing, some Wizard type spells, a fair number of skills. So probably a Bard.)
It said starting level not level 1. Many games are not level based and characters can start more powerful.
