Sorry, MTG noob here, what do these four characters represent?
Not sure if they're in the right order, but...

Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients (Art by Svetlin Velinov; will be revealed by LoadingReadyRun on July 2)

Prosper, Tome-Bound (Art by Yongjae Choi; will be revealed by MTGGoldfish on July 2)

Sefris of the Hidden Ways (Art by Ryan Pancoast; will be revealed by MTG Muddstah on July 2)

Galea, Kindler of Hope (Art by Johannes Voss; will be revealed by The Command Zone on July 2)

(Apologies if too much background on MtG). Commander [or EDH] is a 100 card deck per player format (style of play) where a legendary creature* is set aside out of their deck by each player, and that player can always cast (summon) it if it isn't already on the board. It gets more expensive to do so each time it needs to be re-cast. It's often claimed to be best when played with 4 players who have decks all aiming at the same power level and not-played for just stomping the others into the ground. It can also be played with as few as two players and as many as you want, and can be played very competitively if that's what everyone playing wants to do. WotC makes several 100-card pre-constructed decks each year for Commander, and these are the artwork for the "face cards" (recommended commanders) for the four decks they're releasing for this set. For folks playing "socially" the pre-constructed decks (possibly with a $20 upgrade of individually purchased singles) are surprisingly just fine.

*Some creatures have the ability "partner" that lets you put two of the 100 to the side. Some planeswalker cards say they can be used as a commander. There are rules about how the color identity of the commander relates to the other cards in the deck too. Only one of each card (except basic lands) is allowed in a deck unless the card itself says otherwise.

Ah, I see. And the Commanders themselves, do they tend to be important characters in the story of previous card sets?

Like @Cadence said, these are the main cards for the four Commander decks, though we haven't seen their cards these art pieces are for yet:

  • Dragonborn Path of the Ancestors Barbarian for the Dragon aggro deck
  • Tiefling Tome Warlock for the "Planar Portal" deck
  • Human Necromancer Red Wizard of Thay for "Dungeons of Dread"
  • Half-elf Oath of the Ancients Paladin for the Aura/Enchantments deck

Each of these Commander decks will also have a back-up Commander that is a Legendary Creature based on a D&D Monster.
