D&D General MtG Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Spoiler Thread

He made the base setting, stating he made "All of FR" is a gross overstatement. However Elminster has been his biggest focal point and has shaped the realms for years, not to mention he is Ed Greenwoods character not just "one character". With the seven sisters coming behind that, also not represented . . . You are right that Ed Greenwood probably won't be offended, but that is because that is the type of person he is. However, the slap in the face is still there.

I understand that The Sage of Shadowdale has some personality traits that are less than savory, but you can easily represent him on a card without highlighting those traits. Using the card doesn't mean you have to go out and read the novels. And despite some of those less that savory traits he also has a lot of traits going for him like raising a handful of daughters as a single father, literally living a portion of his life as a woman, and experiencing the world through his daughter's eyes later in life with a decent amount of retrospect.

So there are 4 Commander decks, each with up to 17 new cards built for that deck, so yeah, there's up to another potential 64 cards (The face cards that have already been revealed count towards the 17, so 16*4, but some decks probably share a few of these cards so more likely 56ish) ....

However, I highly doubt there will be Elminster, especially as a Planeswalker. In all the years of making new cards for Commander precons, the only time WotC has ever made new planeswalkers is when they were the actual front commander cards, and that was twice: once for the Commander 2014 and again for Commander 2018.

Also, I just think that holding back a high profile character or two makes sense, because if this set is popular (and I expect it will be), there will be a "Forgotten Realms 2" set, and having Elminster available to headline that set will be a boon.
I don't expect Eliminster as a Planeswalker, but it has been hinted that there are familiar faces in the non-Commander eligible Legendries in these decks. I'll wager that Eliminster or Artus Cimber, for example, will show up.

If they do another D&D Set for mAgic, my guess is they do Eberron, but during the Last War. Five nations, five color combos?

I also do not expect to see him in the commander precons. I don't think the color combinations would fit him as they stand, nor do I think It makes much sense to have him "under" another commander.

Oh, he definitely isn't one of the alts: The face cards are all PC's created for the decks, and the Alts are Monsters. But I can easily see him as a Legendary Creature in the Auras deck.

He is one of the few FR characters that actually travels through planes. Would be weird not to make him a planewalker.
Asmodeus isn't a Planeswalker, either, and there is a recent comic that has him appearing physically in the Realms, even. They are being looser with the PW nature for the D&D Set, methinks.

I don’t understand the notion that it would be an insult to Ed Greenwood to leave Elminster out of the set. Sure, he’s a major character in the setting and kind of a self-insert for Ed, but like… What does it matter if he’s in the set or not? Why would that be an insult? Seems like such a weird thing to get so emotionally attached to.

Conceivable, but again, unlikely. I just doubt we're going to see Elminster ... this time.

I want to preface this by saying I am an Eberron fanboy. I worship at the alter of the Hellcow, Eberron is my favourite DnD setting. But I don't think Eberron is nearly popular enough to be the headline. I'd sooner bet on a second Forgotten Realms set or a "across the DnD multiverse set" with Eberron and other planes showing up. But a Eberron only MTG set? ... Eh, don't think so

I'm still going to get the three boxes I wanted, but I'm really bummed that Elminster is not a part of the main set. And while many of Greenwood's characters got made, leaving out his apparent favorite would still be something that I think might irk him.

I mean, it's one of the most popular D&D Settings, as reported pretty consistently by WotC. The Last War itself seems perfect fodder for MtG card gameplay Shennanigans.
