D&D 5E The October D&D Book is Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons

As revealed by Nerd Immersion by deciphering computer code from D&D Beyond!

Fizban the Fabulous is, of course, the accident-prone, befuddled alter-ego of Dragonlance’s god of good dragons, Paladine, the platinum dragon (Dragonlance’s version of Bahamut).

Which makes my guess earlier this year spot on!

UPDATE -- the book now has a description!

And then WotC, at some point, decided they didn't want to go forward with the project any more.

At this point, it's all speculation. Having been involved in the writing/editing process my entire professional life, I see a breakdown in the revision process. But it's possible that WotC walked away for some other reason.

No one who wasn't a party to the suit is likely to ever really know.
WotC did not have the option of walking away. They tried to walk away by not walking away. That got them sued. WotC caved. The books are coming out.

As for that final part? No. Look, I know the ring of truth when I read it in a highly particularized claim - and that one had it. As for what, specifically, was WotC's real reason for doing what they did we may not know for sure. No argument.

But what they did? Yeah, those highly particularized allegations are in the complaint. That was a contracts claim seeking specific performance or damages in lieu. You don't gussy up a contract claim for specific performance making allegations you can't prove. No serious lawyer does that.

Some claims read like a wild story -- a relatively small few read like a factum -- the vast majority mostly fall in between.

Weiss and Hickman's complaint reads like a factum. That legal fight was over before it began. Which is why WotC settled before affidavits of documents were exchanged, let alone before discovery. I infer that WotC's counsel told them it was hopeless on liability - and that their best hope, that Weiss and Hickman didn't have the money to sue them and see it through was a bad bet to make. You don't get to have a fight on damages if W&H are content for an Order for specific performance. (a court Order deeming approval of the manuscript and authorizing Del-Rey to publish). Instant success with money soon to follow on a milestone payment - then royalties. (Client gets paid within months -- I get paid within months, too. I like it; I like it a lot.)

That's where I would have gone as counsel for the plaintiff; on a motion for summary judgment, too. No trial on damages necessary. No jury required. Giddy up. I put my chances of that result north of 75%. That's about as good as it gets on an injunction case.

WotC settled almost immediately. That tells you all you need to know.

So, here's some high-octane looking ahead speculation;

  • 2016: Volo's Guide to Monsters released
  • 2017: Volo appears as an NPC with the magical item "Volo's Guide to Monsters" in Tomb of Annihilation"

  • 2017: Xanathar's Guide to Everything is released
  • 2018: Xanathar appears in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (so does Volo, for that matter)

  • 2018: Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes is released
  • 2019: Mordenkainen shoes up as an NPC in Avernus

No "named Guide in 2019

  • 2020: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is released, where Tasha's reign as a "Witch Queen" with fey servitors is depicted.
  • 2021: a "Witch Queen" is set to be a major part of Witchlight, based on some leaked elements, perhaps Tasha?

  • 2021: Fizban's Treasury of Dragons releases
  • 2022: Fizban appears in a Curse of Strahd style reboot of the War of the Lance adventures?
Mordenkainen showed up in Curse of Strahd, shoes and all.

True, and in the last Ed Greenwood Forgotten Realms novel in Waterdeep.

Still, it is an intriguing pattern to consider. Maybe VA Richten will even play a part in some Adventure?
Did Paladine or Bahamut show up in something earlier? I think his card counts but I mean something from the D&D side of WotC.

Also, don’t the magic card sets take considerably longer to make? How long ago would the Monk have been set?

Finally, I haven’t seen anyone else confirm this from DnDBeyonds API. I have seen others who looked for it and it wasn’t there. I think I trust Nerd Immersion but second confirmation is always a good idea. Have I missed that from someone?

I mean, really, Candlekeep is a LARGE issue of Dungeon without the advice articles......More of those types of products work for me 100% of the time. Much more interesting than reprinting old dungeons like Yawning Portal did.
I think calling Yawning Portal a reprint product gives it too much credit. It should have half the dungeons, at most, and a lot more content about each.
