Star Wars Outer Rim

Bought this game just before Covid. Played last night for the first time. With two player it is fun. Playing again soon.

There is definitely an RPG aspect to this boardgame. This morning I'm looking at it and I see the possibility of doing a completely random rpg SW campaign in which the DM only does the NPCs, Combats and prepares the locations for encounters. The PC would be free to go where they want on the board and take the jobs or bounties in top of the decks. Pure 100% random Space Crawl.... maybe with Star Wars d6 or SW Saga.

Have you used a board game as basis to create a RPG campaign? What are the pros and cons?

Depends how much you want to integrate the two games.

If you are just using a deck of cards for adventure seeds, well, then that's not really using the game, is it?

If you are mechanically linking the two - like adventure results influence the board game, you need some mechanic for that. The biggest con of this would be that you have to maintain the boardgame state for the entire campaign, which might be a pain in the butt.

No not just the cards. The two would be linked. Using photoshop to create a digital version of the board would be the best option. That way it takes no space and the cat cannot destroy it.

I can see where you're coming from. I love SW: Outer Rim, and I definitely feel that each mission could contain a whole RPG adventure.

But the DM would need to put in a lot of effort to fill in the details, particularly if it's all supposed to be off-the-cuff. Then I'd prefer to just plan my own adventures and campaigns.

That's not to say there isn't plenty of ideas to be stolen every time you play Outer Rim.
