they can’t abandoned the barbarian, the class is an ever changing archetype.
the class is a cross fit of multiples skill and flavor and thus very dependent of edition mechanics. Who knows if in years to come the name Barbarian wont be a shamed one and force a redefinition. For now the class is kept for legacy reason, but it is not a stable concept.

So is there a Barbarian build that burst out with fire magic? Asking for a friend
Path of the Storm Herald surrounds you with an aura when you rage. This aura can be attuned to the desert (fire), the sea (lightning), or the tundra (cold), and this attunement can be changed when leveling up. Desert deals a small amount of fire damage (starting at 2 points, going up to 6 points at level 20) to nearby creatures, sea blasts one creature with lightning, and tundra grants temporary hit points to allies.

There's also the Path of Wild Magic, which does a random magic thing when you rage. No fire though.

Cu Chulainn classic celtic hero had an aura that built up while he was fighting (that might be triggered when hit points reached halfway point?) first time in a battle it was severe dangerous amounts of heat that harmed those who touched or perhaps were adjacent to him. He could not turn it off... without special effort after the fight. /only slight interpretation there.
