My beef with bard is that I simply don't have a name for an iconic "bard" in my fantasy. (...) Not a single bard.

Here's a famous one.
The second picture shows the correct reaction to bards, by the way.

All this talk of bad bard examples, and nobody mentions Väinämöinen? The guy who entombed a rival in the ground by singing, and invented a magic harp from the jawbone of a giant pike he killed? Who stole magic secrets from a giant by building a forge in his belly? Who started the whole "umlauts are metal" thing?

Then again, the guy failed in his major adventure, and then some virgin-born baby called him out for his hubris and failures and he sailed off in a huff.

About bards.... they are full casters, full casters can't suck. Period.
It's not so much that they suck, but that they are annoying and conceptually silly, to certain folks. I mean, really, a troubador casting wish? Come on! ;)

Edit: Added the clearly-necessary smiley.

It's a fairly big split in the player base. There's a lot of people who play it like a miniatures wargame...and a lot of people who play it like immersive improv theater. There's a little overlap. But WotC has to design with both halves of the fan base in mind. Not a great position to be in. They could always go back to Basic and Advanced. Basic for the lighter rules / improv crowd; Advanced for the heavier rules / wargame crowd.
You "a lot of" is really wide.

There was enough peopel who played it like 4e to lose the market lead position and drop behind pathfinder. There are enough people who play it like 5e to regain all of that and be #1 in the market. That second "a lot" is much larger than that first "a lot".

With more people liking how it is now, doing it the otherway would literally be the wrong choice in terms of sales.

That's something I wish was put in all classes, subclasses starting at level 1 or at max level 2. And all classes gainning subclasses in the same levels.
Yeah, I stated in my reply to the final survey question before the demographic questions that all classes should receive their subclass at first level.
