I had a 3.X homebrew in which I designed a race based on Thri-Kreen. But they were size S, flew like dragonflies, and could communicate via bioluminescence.

Some kind of Sea Star- based on Crown of Thorns, perhaps- could be the scourge of the marine world, what with their powers of regeneration. Psionic coral could be fun. Other notable aquatic invertebrates that could be inspiration for marine species would be mantis shrimp, Man-O-Wars, box jellies, nudibranchs, cone snails, and the more intelligent mollusks (the cephalopods). (In my sig, there‘s a link for Aquatic adventuring that could come in handy.)

Coconut crabs would be fun to work with on land.

Macroscopic versions of tardigrades have potential, too.

And let’s not forget hymenopterans! Sentient Fire Ants & Murder Hornets, anyone?

At least according to everything published, mind flayers are vertebrates. Or rather, nothing ever suggests otherwise, and they are literally created from human stock. Nothing in their description says they lose their bones.

It's your world, though, and they can be anything you want.
