D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie: Action Packed, Funny as Hell

According to Justice Smith, one of the stars of the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons movie, the film is "action-packed, thrilling, funny as hell".

In a conversation with Collider, Smith said:

[Goldstein and Daley are] incredible. They’re so funny and they have such clear vision. I loved Game Night. That movie is so good and so funny. And it’s such a clear, specific story. It doesn’t try and be anything that it’s not. I think they approached this the same way. I can’t spoil too much but it’s action-packed, thrilling, funny as hell… it’s all of the things and yet it has a clear idea. That specificity is key in storytelling and John and Jonathan do that so well, being like, "This is the story we’re telling but they’re making it enjoyable the entire time." This is me not trying to spoil the movie in any regards. I’ve given away no details.

The movie, which also stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, and Sophia Lillis, is scheduled for March 3rd, 2023.

Legend
My view of Merry is coloured by the fact that, when I first read the novels at a young age, I assumed it was a girl's name and read Merry as being female throughout all three books, despite all pronouns to the contrary.

Between that and Merry doing all the organisation of the move from Bag End to Crickhollow, I had this enduring image of Merry as the 'team Mom' that subsequent reads never entirely managed to overwrite in my head.

But The Hobbit - ugh! I knew when announced it that going to 3 movies meant it was going to be packed with filler. It was awful. I can handle the LotR trilogy and rewatch it. I really won't sit through The Hobbit trilogy again. I'd rather watch Meet the Feebles.
They were already well into production on a 2-film adaptation of The Hobbit when Warner decided they wanted 3 films instead. Once I heard that news, I knew the movies were going to have significant problems.

I still think the movies are phenomenal, but stuff like this gets on my nerves more and more. Humor is fine. Humor that flies in the face of lore and the text itself is another thing entirely.

Yeah, absolutely. It's when he starts butchering the lore just to get in another "short" joke that I really get annoyed.

Steering back to the D&D movie, I found the following bit of information interesting:

Several Scenes Were Changed Due To Current Events

In an intriguing development, Dungeons & Dragons (2023) might prove to be a more intimate movie due to COVID-19 restrictions. As John Francis Daley explained it, the movie was in the early stages of pre-production when lockdowns went into effect. During their time at home, the writers penned another draft of their screenplay that accounted for the lack of people that they could safely secure on their sets. In their original script, there were plans to include several extras and large crowds. But as Daley recounts, those sequences were recontextualized and reimagined, which might result in a different film than the one that Daley and Jonathan Goldstein originally had in mind.

I could be reading into things, but perhaps there's going to be some Realms-wide threat that caused people to disappear. And perhaps I'm really out on a limb now (and in serious danger of it snapping beneath the weight of my speculations), but perhaps it's something like the Death Curse amplified for the screen...maybe Cumberbatch is voicing Acererak?

I read that a bit more straightforwardly as more Dungeon crawling?

Im guessing they are talking about something more mundane like scenes with crowded streets to make it feel like a city. Maybe some type of fair or event in the city was part of the storyboard and that had to be axed. Which of course, caused certain parts of the plot to be shifted slightly.

Yeah, I would assume it's much more boring than my speculation would indicate.

It's been interesting, seeing how shows and movies shot during the pandemic had to change. The Walking Dead, as awful as this final season has been so far, has some really clear examples of how storytelling and filming have been altered by the pandemic.

Some of the shots of Alnwick looked like a fair/tourney. Maybe it was originally due to be shot inside rather than outside?
