These days I have to imagine that if you have any sort of strong WotC / D&D credit on your resume you can move on to another creative position elsewhere for probably better money... or you have made enough connections in the business that you can decide to go independent and make your own stuff and still maintain your standard of living.

I think we're missing a golden opportunity for a betting game here. Anyone have an org chart for WotC with years of service? We could make Bingo boards....

They tend to evolve the house when they start making preparations for a new edition. People are likely aware of that trend and getting ahead of the issue by finding a good position early, rather than scrambling for any position late.

There was a recent thread about salaries in RPG creative positions, kicked off by none less than Sean K. Reynolds sharing salary information. No, there isn't really better pay out there in the field, and at least WotC has benefits as well.
