D&D General War Mounts for the Different Fantasy Races/Monsters

I'm reminded of some fantasy novel I read way back in my teen years, where the good guys were facing off against a barbarian horde that rode giant spiders.... can't remember the title, it's been a long time...

Cannibal halflings on kangaroos!

I'd love to see a battle with both sides charging at each other on giant turtles. They'd actually have time for some epic poetry.

I’m still working on building the various kingdoms and racial cultures in my world, but so far….
  • Elite Hill and Mountain Dwarf warriors can be seen riding Griffins. Battle Rams are the more common mounts for Hill and Mountain Dwarfs. They are large sheep with massive horns that are fearless and loyal to their riders, but are also gentle and docile outside of combat.
  • Some Halfling with ride Giant Boar, others that tend to the waterways will ride River Dolphins or Crocodiles. The Halflings that venture into the wild plains and sparse forests inhabited by Gnolls will ride Hyenas and Giant Hyenas that were gifted to them by their Gnoll allies.
  • Gnolls also ride Giant Hyenas, while high ranking members of Gnoll society with ride Hyaenodon which are an ancient and primal breed of Hyena sacred to the Gnolls as they consider them the firstborn creations of the late deity Gorellik.
  • Dragonborn will often ride Dragonels, War Drakes, or Wyverns.
  • Gnomes are often seen riding Giant Beetles or Giant Praying Mantises. They will also use Giant Boar as well.

It is something that is going to vary, but I go pretty classic.

When I had a half-million strong Orc horde invade a planar city there was multiples of this:
