Oh, the nostalgia! This was a lot of me, too, with the music to match. Don’t know what inspired your post, but you just messed with my temporal reality (and determined my playlist for the rest of the week).

Cheers!

Didn't have any #1 songs on it (except in Australia), but Weird Al's in 3-D came out in 1984.

Looking at the Top 40 for that year in the States, here are the ones that weren't on the UK list:

Say Say Say - McCartney and Jackson
Footloose - Kenny Loggins
Jump - Van Halen
Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
Missing You - John Waite
All Night Long - Lionel Richie
Let's Hear it for the Boy - Deniece Williams
Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springsteen
Jump (For My Love) - The Pointer Sisters
Talking in Your SLeep - The Romantics
Let's Go Crazy - Prince and the Revolution
Say it Isn't So - Daryl Hall and John Oates
Hold Me Now - THompson Twins
Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell
Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder
I Can Dream About You - Dan Hartman
The Glamourous Life - Sheila E.
Oh Sherrie - Steve Perry
Stuck On You - Lionel Richie
I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues - Elton John
She Bop - Cyndi Lauper
Borderline - Madonna
Sunglasses at Night - Corey Hart
Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol
Hear Comes the Rain Again - The Eurythmics
Uptown Girl - Billy Joel
Sister Christian - Night Ranger

In comic Books - Alan Moore took over Swamp Thing, "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" was published, Secret Wars, Crisis on Infinite Earths, West Coast Avengers Mini-Series

In Movies - Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, The Terminator, Amadeus, A Nightmare on Elm Street, IJ and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, Beverly Hills Cop, Spinal Tap, Buckaroo Banzai, and Trek III were among the releases.

All these song are from the last century. Not this century. We changed century 22 years ago.

Just shows how bad this century has been, everyone involved thought the illegal entry was so obviously better than the choices from the 2000s+ that they didn't even notice it wasn't legal.

(I think there are several years from 77 to 87 I would also have taken as answers).

LOL!

Well, it has more to do about when you were born. You are young and know nothing. Everyting seems great. Talk to kids who were teens when grunge was around and you'll have a very different list. To them 1984 musics sounds fake and manufactured. They are not entirely wrong. I've never stopped hearing good music after 1984 up until today. ;-)

Fun Facts-

Lionel Ritchie's Hello had the creepiest, most unaware video.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax video was banned due to explicit (gay) content.

Such luminaries as George Michael (Wham) and Boy George (Culture Club) didn't come out until 1998 and 1995, respectively.

When the Doves Cry (Prince) sounds so different because there is no bass.

The Thompson Twins self-identified as a trio at that time (the musical version of Blake's 7).

The video for Dancing in the Dark was the debut of Courtney Cox (Friends).

She Bop is about self-pleasure.

Daryl Hall and John Oates will only go by that naming- they refuse to be identified as "Hall & Oates."

Matthew Wilder and Laura Branigan can only make straight-up bangers.

Ray Parker Jr. was successfully sued by Huey Lewis (and/or the News) for plagiarizing his song, I Want a New Drug.

Yes, I always ask for it to be played at straigth weddings. They are oblivious of the meaning since almost no one ever 'really' listen to the lyrics. They just dance along because of the awesome beat. My private little joke.

I'm in the age category where the mid-80s was when I acquired some of my first love for pop music, but I was a teenager living in Seattle when Grunge took off, so that's hugely important to me as well. I would pick Soundgarden over Duran Duran if I absolutely had to, but thankfully I don't. :D

Yes, eclecticism is much better. One must vary the pleasures to make life more fun.
