D&D 5E Spells that have disappeared...

J-H

Hero
Glitterdust, my favorite 3e spell since it qas an AOE that ignored Magic Resistance, eliminated invisibility, and gave a -40 stealth penalty. I shut down many encounters, especially golem encounters, with one well-placed Glitterdust.

Those were the days.
Faerie Fire serves much the same roll, albeit at the power of a 1st level spell.
Prismatic Wall... Your Wall of Force is puny and only one color mage...
Prismatic Wall is still there, 9th level spell.

Didn't the 2E FR City of Splendors boxed set have suped up MM spell for the watch mages? ICR the name or effect off hand. Have to look it up later tonight after our d20/5E Modern game. Last week they temporarily destroyed Lich Rick James and stole his UNITY ring but he'll be back because you know "permanency".

Enchanting an item should not be a spell. It should be a process that takes days, weeks, or even months or years for something big enough. And so too with permanent spells - which is why adventurers don't use them.
I agree that creating an item should be a process within reason, but in the end what's to keep it functioning, a permanency spell. To each their own, though I'd have preferred the spell have been left in the game and not so much of a grey area. Casting a known spell then making it permanent with the spell is pretty cut and dry and shouldn't require a prolonged process other than the components and casting times IMO.

What disappeared is prismatic sphere, but it got folded into prismatic wall (which got bumped up from 8th level to 9th level spell) as an option.

Overall, I like the consolidation of spells that 5e did (like these spells, as well as with Bigby's hand and cure wounds).

I can't recall ever seeing it but has there ever officially been something to replace this spell or explain how permanent magical effects are achieved in 5E?

I really like the mechanism employed in teleportation circle, guards and wards, and Mordenkainen's private sanctum and would like to see this used with other spells and effects.
Teleportation Circle PHB p282 said:
You can create a permanent teleportation circle by casting this spell in the same location every day for one year. You need not use the circle to teleport when you cast the spell in this way.

Dragonhelm

Knight of Solamnia
One of my favorites is Fire Shuriken, from Oriental Adventures.

I suppose one could mimic it in 5e by using scorching ray or reflavoring magic missile to cause fire damage.

I just love this visual, though.

Are you thinking of slingstars?

The spell that I miss the most, and that I really need to recreate for my next campaign, is shadow walk. Using the plane of shadow as a shortcut to travel great distances is such a cool idea, especially if you treat the journey through the shadows as normal overland travel through the plane of shadows.
