In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

Evocation was universal in 2e, I believe 1e had only white robes that could cast evocation, red robes could cast invocation (which I think was literally 2 spells).

I literally just looked it up in the 1e dragonlance adventures and only invocation is listed for red robes.
the 1e Dragonlance Adventures states this (page 29):

Edit I see, you're looking at the experience tables. That explains the confusion. Like many things in 1e, there are conflicts or major ambiguity.

I love that they went with Lunar Magic because it essentially unites the best bit of the 4e Cosmic Magic Sorcerer (or at least the best bit that hadn't been stolen by the Druid Circle of the Stars) with the 4Essentials Witch.

It feels right without stepping on the Druid or Warlock toes - this is our Wicca subclass. LOVE IT.

What I DON'T love is Feat Chains. Feat Chains should die in a fire. And Backgrounds granting you a feat? That's either significant power creep (which is okay if it's ONLY in DragonLance as its "thing" like Theros' Supernatural Gifts or Ravnica's Guilds or Strixhavens Spell-granting Backgrounds), or else it means these feats shouldn't be feats and are a waste of a feat slot for anyone who didn't take those backgrounds - they're essentially the return of the Feat Tax.

While Kender… I find it interesting that WotC have decided to throw out any connection the Halfling lineage boxes with this one. It's not the "tradeable" features that Stouts and Lightfoots and Ghostwises and Lotusdens and Mark of Healing and Mark of Hospitality have - since now every "subrace" is its own independent lineage, they can diversify from each other more mightily. This could be a sign of how significantly different the 2024 PHB "subrace" lineages will be from one another: kind of like how 3.5e High Elves became 4e Eladrin (until Essentials and later 5e split High Elves away from Eladrin again) while Wood Elves just became straight up "Elves."

I wouldn't be surprised if that's a direction they start moving again in in 2024, if not in independent names, then perhaps in very different,. but still slightly related, lineage stat blocks.

just so WotC can make easy cash pleasing a demographic that can't focus on their books after the first paragraph?

Mod Note:

The insult here was uncalled for, and unacceptable. You've earned yourself a trip out of this discussion.

Everyone else, if you get so heated you forget to be polite, this is what is likely to happen to you. So, keep your mind on being respectful and kind to others. Thank you.

I really like the Lunar Magic Sorcerer. I would love to play in a whole campaign with similarly-themed characters. Maybe a Circle of Stars Druid, Twilight Domain Cleric, Lunar Magic Sorcerer and a Horizon Walker Ranger would work well together? Or Devotion/Watchers Paladin instead of the Horizon Walker? That's a lot of casters, but Druids and Clerics can go into melee if they need/want to, especially if the Cleric has Twilight Sanctuary up.

Edit: Realized that Sun Soul Monk would work really well with the themes of the rest of these characters.

I like it too. Heck so much I'd be crazy enough to refluff the subclass name as "Silverstar of Selune."

Even though the actual Silverstar would be more a Cleric(Specialty Priest.)
