D&D 5E What do you consider "good" ability scores?

Indeed, just adding that you don't need good ones either.

I agree, a lot of variability there.

Just to point out, for my latest campaign where I wanted fairness but also a bit of randomness, we used Barflip/Gridflip and it worked like a charm, all the players loved it, the scores are not too high and not too low, there is a bit a thinking in creating the character but randomness is still present, etc.

I can only encourage people to try it.
It's a nice method. I'd likely make the starting scores 4s rather than 6s. Giving maximums of 16 and 66 points across scores (versus maximums of 18 and 78).

Base arrays ranging from 11, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11 to 16, 16, 16, 6, 6, 6, versus arrays ranging from 13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 13 to 18, 18, 18, 8, 8, 8. To my taste, the latter arrays are overly strong if also using racial ASIs (whether fixed or placed as desired).

It's a good point for 5e with starting scores usually not higher than 16, and easy to implement as an option.

Of the four sets you rolled up, I prefer the first set because it would make any character above average to somewhat exceptional before the +2/+1 or even the +1/+1/+1 bonuses were even added. The third set is not too bad either, but I wouldn't have such an average Constitution score. I want my characters to live to see another day. ;)

Anything over 13 is a "good" score.

Basically, as long as you have 3 or more scores that are over 13, you have a viable character that has a decent chance of not sucking or dying immediately. Preferably 4 or more. But I'll say 3 or more is doable.

Anything over 15 is a "better" score and, ideally, at least two of however many 13+ scores you have will be over 15 as well.
