D&D 5E your fist level wizard has used their 2 spells. Now What?

I wonder if they should have made a cantrip that increased the effectiveness of thrown or ranged weapons slightly, so Wizards still had to carry them around.

Sort of a ranged shillelagh or something...
Hmm, wonder how that could look?

Too good and suddenly the magic initiate feat becomes even more attractive to martials!

A cantrip that allows you to use your spellcasting ability modifier to hit and to damage. Here's a draft:

Telekinetic Shot
cantrip transmutation
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60'
Target: A creature or object within range
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous
The somatic component for this spell is firing or throwing a projectile - it does not need to be aimed at the target. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the projectile you launched hits the target and does its weapon damage plus your spellcasting ability modifier.

If you're relying on 2 spells slots to be useful for an entire adventuring day, you're in trouble. Especially if you spent both of them in the first fight.

<start grognard rant>
Casters need to learn to pace themselves, even with these new fangled attack cantrips. Going nova feels awesome, but more than likely you're wasting resources on weaker enemies. Back in the day, you never used your last spell slot until it was life or death (or adventure failure), even against the BBEG. After you beat the boss, it's not over until you get home alive, and I've seen more than a few careless PCs die after they thought they were safe. Use those cantrips often, holding your spells for when they count the most, and you might be able to nova against the BBEG (if you do, drink deep the tears of your DM :giggle: ).
<end grognard rant>

If your Dex and Int are both 16, then a crossbow is superior to any cantrip at that level. If your Dex is 14, then a crossbow is roughly on par. (Fire bolt is +5 to hit and 1d10, crossbow is +4 to hit and the equivalent of 1d12. Toll the dead is generally superior to fire bolt, but I'm not sure how often that advantage would hold at 1st level when your foes are almost as fragile as you are.)
Agreed. Weapon attacks can be useful, even if you normally spam cantrips. A wizard can use that light crossbow to attack targets well outside the range of Firebolt. It's at disadvantage, but better that than nothing! My current wizard plans to use a longbow when not bladesinging or casting a leveled spell, since damage-wise it'll be better until level 5. Level 5 will be awkward, but at level 6 I can make a Firebolt and longbow attack.

thank you. was using a cantrip ray but looking for additional suggestions. any other rituals ?

Find Familiar is, of course, quite popular.
Comprehend Languages, Detect Magic, Identify, and Tenser's Floating Disc all have pretty great utility as rituals.
Even Alarm and Unseen Servant have their moments.
Bonus points if you take the underappreciated Illusory Script and find a way to use it that changes the course of your campaign. You'll need a decent improvisational DM for that to happen...

Perhaps this? Add to Warlock, Sorceror and Wizard spell list. Maybe to Bard & Ranger?

Combat Insight
cantrip Divination
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range: Self
Components: V, S, M (An obsidian arrowhead)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Upon casting this spell, you gain a mystical martial insight. For the duration of your spell, melee or ranged attack rolls with weapons use your spellcasting modifier to hit and damage instead of Strength or Dexterity (respectively). However, you must use your entire focus for the attack and cannot use Extra Attack when gaining the benefit from this spell.

At Higher Levels: At 5th level, your attacks with weapons deal an extra 1d6 damage, based on the weapon type - bludgeoning, slashing or piercing. At 11th level they deal an extra 2d6 damage. At 15th level, weapon attacks deal an extra 3d6 damage.

Ideas to keep this from being exploitable with Arcane Trickster Sneak Attack & Paladin Smite (possibly as a Paladin-Warlock? Or is Concentration sufficient?
