There's only two things I'd say against that: 1) Doing both CharGen and Pregens would make the Starter more expensive (as a retailer I can attest that the price point on 5eStarter is ideal).
Surely not by much, though - the Essentials Kit contains 5 blank character sheets, which must surely be overkill given how easy it is to access copying facilities. I wouldn't have thought changing to 5 pregens and 1 blank would be so costly.

I also wonder - (I am seriously asking this to anyone who feels this way) - Why, if you already know how to play and to make characters, would you want the Starter to have CharGen rules? What difference does it make?
Well, mostly it's because the rulebook in the Essentials Kit is so close to perfect that it seems silly to include anything else - at that point you're just reinventing the wheel.

But there is another part to it: if the set includes char gen and a set of monsters and a set of magic items, you have a complete form of the game (albeit a sorely limited one). Omit the char gen, and it's strictly a pay-for preview of the "real thing".

I don't think the omission of char gen is a deal-breaker, either for the box as a starter set nor in terms of my purchase (which is solely about the adventure). But I do think it's unfortunate.

Well, don't forget that the character creation rules are readily available for free, along with character sheet PDFs, and that this set is going to point to online resources like that specifically.

Let’s look at the image we have. It is titled “Chapter 1 Playing the Game” which matches the title of chapter 2 in the Essentials rule book.

the new rule book has ability scores and modifiers right at the beginning of this chapter, in essentials that’s inside chapter 1: Creating a Character.

Now I know “all images are not final” fyi.

Good catch! I think it's pretty clear that character generation is not assumed here.

Yeah, given that we know it's 32 pages, char gen wasn't going to be included. :( It will probably be a near-reprint of the rulebook from the Starter Set (which was 32 pages, IIRC), though hopefully with any rules updates from 5.5e.

From just those two pages it looks significantly different from the starter set rulebook. In fact it looks like a merger of the starter sets chapter 1 with the essentials kit chapter 2.

But I agree that there probably will not be chargen.

Sorry, what? I think we have a misunderstanding. You seem to be describing pregens as more costly. Including CharGen is the more costly option. I would assume that the difference is roughly the difference in MSRP between the Starter Set ($20 USD) and the Essentials Kit ($25 USD), so about $5, or +25%.

It's not a huge $ difference, but I can tell you that the Starter Set still outsells the Essentials Kit by quite a bit (though I'm sure that price is only one of many reasons for that).

I haven't checked it all, but that section on Advantage and Disadvantage is almost word-for-word the same as the section in the Starter Set (which isn't all that surprising).

I'm sure it will be very similar to the Starter, with improvements that they learned with the Essentials kit, and since then. Most of it should be available for free as D&D Basic, like it was with the other sets (and THAT will definitely include CharGen!).

I think we can all agree that the most important things will be: How good is the adventure; and How easy (clear) will it be for a new DM to run (and run well).
