This whole post is baffling.

While I fundamentally disagree with not caring about other people, I agree that the free stuff is generally offered as a bribe to get more people to sign up. I'm not sure that they would never give out free stuff in the unlikely scenario that "everyone" was signed up, but this free stuff is almost certainly there to get more people to sign up.

I don't know if I made that make any more sense or not.

Just got finished reviewing my notes over a one shot I ran with Vecna last night. Overall of the party has zero knowledge of his potential in the meta sense he is deadly just due to having so many different ways of chipping parties down while staying relatively stable himself. The party wasn't expecting him to act like a melee gish and by the time they got a hold of his tactics 2/5 of the party was down and one was dominated with little chance to break out in time to make a difference. They ended up using DI to run away.
**The scenario was a 5 story cylinder chamber about 60 across with a spiral staircase on the inside wall with low walls proving cover every landing. Party started in the middle and Vecna started at the bottom. Sort of a race to the top objective to close a portal where Vecna is attempting to draw power from the negative plane to transcend his limits as a lich.

Interesting and thank you for sharing. That seems about what I would guess. Can I ask a few questions:

1. What level was the party?
2. How many where there?
3. Was each PC run by a different person or did some have multiple PCs to run.

Don't underestimate the importance of maintaining your members/subscribers with that same sort of "free" stuff.

Oh I don't. That was my reason for the "I'm not sure that they would never give out free stuff in the unlikely scenario that "everyone" was signed up"-bit. I probably needlessly understated it there.

I agree with you. On the other hand, I find that internet arguments spend (IMO) too much time discussing how people say things, and miss what people are saying. As annoying as it can be, hyperbole is a perfectly normal way of speaking. It's just that in person, you can usually tell (by tone or body language) that both the speaker and the spoken to are supposed to know that hyperbole is being used for emphasis, and not meant to be taken as literal fact. Same goes for the understatement.

In a perfect world, we'd all learn how we need to change the way we communicate in order to do it online (a very different skill set than in person) but frankly, a lot of us (not just us here, but people in general) aren't great at in-person discussions either.

Yes, PDF is an old format. D&D Beyond, which I use for all my 5e games, offers a lot of great functionality. The reason many of us would like a PDF is that we want an electronic copy that we can keep accessing no matter what. Editions go out of print, online services change or are discontinued. Even when WotC had decided not to sell electronic versions of D&D products at all, I kept using my AD&D PDFs that I had bought long ago. PDFs, for me, are not meant to be in place of DDB. They would be an additional format.

That's fair, and I think it would be nice. I just find it odd when PDF is treated like the ultimate in game text technology...

I mean, WotC does sell PDFs through the DMsGuild, and longterm I think we may see older 5E books go there as they become Legacy content.

I think that this Vecna block and accompanying mini-Adventure really showcase how WotC can provide high level content in the future. Super high level stuff has been something they said is hard to sell in a book, because most people don't play high level and those who do areoatly playing DIY creations of their own.

Beyond allows WorC to put out microdrops of content, without the need of a whole book. So they can put out little modular high level bits and bobs.
