And yeah Ravenloft is very much the best example here. If you like Planescape as it is, just hope they don't use Van Richten's as a guide.
As much as I dislike the changes to Ravenloft for 5E, I actively despise WotC's treatment of Spelljammer. I'd rather they give settings I like the Ravenloft treatment than the Spelljammer treatment. Three minuscule books that barely cover the setting in the thinnest possible detail in an over-priced slipcase. I'd much rather they put it all in one book with more room to flesh things out. A Van Richten's-style Spelljammer book that spent several pages on each of a dozen or more worlds, regions, etc would have been infinitely better than what we got. I'm just waiting for the Planescape fans to realize WotC already said Planescape is going to be a slipcase a la Spelljammer.

It would at least have room for more elements you can use in your home game. As much as I dislike Ravenloft, it at least did that much.

Strange New Worlds is a recent Star Trek series that follows Captain Christopher Pike and the USS Enterprise. It's set some years before James T. Kirk takes command of the ship.
Thanks! I am familiar with the series, but I didn’t know that was the name. Is it on a streaming service?

Speaking for myself, I think doing Planescape in a three-book slipcase format can work out alright as long as they don't try to cram in too much.

I would adore a proper, full-sized hardcover Manual of the Planes for the Great Wheel, but that probably would be too much without a drastically increased page count or dedicating a fourth book in the set to it - maybe we can get one down the road at some point, but for the time being it's probably best to let that aspect be carried by the existing planar entries in the DMG, whatever specific planar locations are detailed in the adventure module(s), and previous edition/3rd party material on the DMs Guild.

Instead, they should probably just focus on a solid city-guide for Sigil in the player-facing book (plus the standard player options, faction descriptions, etc.). If they do that and make a decent plane-hopping "Tour around the Great Wheel" for the adventure book, I think that will work well enough.

Particularly given that this release should also finally open Planescape up on DMs Guild.

Right. I think that's kind of a weird knock-on effect to all this. People are far too willing to accept WotC not doing proper settings anymore because they know the fans will fill any gaps on DM's Guild, or they can simply use the old lore. I'm all for the settings opening up on DM's Guild, all for fans writing stuff for settings and putting it up on DM's Guild, and all for using the old lore. I object to WotC intentionally doing a half-ass job of it in the first place. I'm a huge Spelljammer fan and I can't help but think the recent tiny slipcase is a bad joke. There's no there there.
