D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

I've never played in, nor have I heard of, a game where the fighter got special treatment. They still worked just fine.
Consider yourself lucky. The way people new, veteran, new school, and old school talk about combat and fighters, the fighter is the class with the most variable experience in playstyle and ruleset. I've read many ENworlder talk about giving fighter special treatment.

I'm not assuming anything. I'm listening to people who say the fighter is fine, then add complex base houserules on combat or make NPCs always talk to fighters first or make the fighter the leader of the party's henchmen, or give the fighter on the spot bonuses sourced from the background of the fighter or have the king or lord respect have a more favorable reaction to the fighter or use the treasure charts and adventure hoards that are heavly biased to fighters...
They could even be allowing a lot of short rests and likely playing only in the lower tiers, it does not have to be explicit to greatly alter the play experience

If it wasn't for enworld I wouldn't know there was an issue. 🤷‍♂️

I absolutely had issues in 3.x, I just don't think they're that big any more.

My issue again is less about wizards and more that the 20th level fighter doesn't represent a weaponsmater nor armorsmaster.

The 20th level fighter is weaker than Hawkeye who is at best level 10, has no powers, and only has one ability score above 15 (Dexterity 20) due to the fighter being hamstrung in order to be simple for noobs.and appease people who ban barbarians
Why is Hawkeye only 10th level? If there were a DnD equivalent of "best arrow guy in the world", I would think they would be above 10th level.

Have you looked at the warmage class from Mage Hand Press? It was specifically designed to be the class that focuses on cantrips.
Yes. It's more or less what I was looking for with a few adjustments.

If you think ENworld talks about fighter issues a lot, don't go on YouTube or Reddit

When the 1D&D playtest gets to fighter, you might be in for a eyeopener. The Next playtest around fighter was madness and that was before the demo shifted. A lot of fans really want (often opposing) changes on the class.

Which is why I recommended giving feedback for the 2024 edition. If they change the fighter in ways I really don't care for, I may not move on. Time will tell.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease notice because there's only so many ways of saying that things work just fine. People who have no complaints are rarely the loudest.

Hawkeye is the 2nd or 3nd best marksman in Marvel but he lacks the power to make the big changes that 11th-16th level PCs do.

On his own show and the skips between MCU movies, with the Avengers he reverts to a regional hero.

A better question is how would you be able to tell a 10th level fighter from say a 15th level fighter from a 20th level fighter?
Officially, it's 3 things

  1. Area of effect
    • 10th level Fighter affects a region of a nation
    • 15th level Fighter affects a nation
    • 20th level Fighter affects a plane
  2. Strength of Foe
    • 10th level Fighter kills a young dragon
    • 15th level Fighter kills an adult dragon
    • 20th level Fighter kills an ancient dragon
  3. Magic items
    1. 10th level Fighter own a rare Vicious longsword
    2. 15th level Fighter owns a very rare Nine Lives Lifestealer
    3. 20th level Fighter owns a legendary Vorpal Sword

I'd consider even the 2nd or 3rd best 20th level. DnD is not made to support superheroes. Thor is a god. Maybe the next edition will have some Immortals tier where that could be explored. And it would certainly be interesting. But the current game is not designed with that in mind.
