If the gods were somehow bound and kept from acting before the Cataclysm, perhaps even the Cataclysm did not occur due to their interventions. Perhaps the Kingpriest himself summoned the Cataclysm as the culmination of a bizarre ritual to gain all power. This theory would make some sense out of the fact that the Temple of Istar—the heart of Evil—was not destroyed, but gated to the Abyss. Might the Kingpriest have gone with it? If so, surely the journey would have struck him mad.

There. Done.

Evil dude locked the gods out and kerploded everything.

No pretending he was good.

No 'good' gods doing an atrocity to punish one dude.

All the half-assing up to and including Soth is explained as them being hedged out. Simple. No BS.

Why are any of the other 'theories' a thing aside from wanting morally ambiguous gods?

Putting aside other topics like kender, gully dwarves, or Goldmoon, how does the Cataclysm as vaguely described as it is actually create a controversy for them to avoid in a product? I've read a bunch of criticism of people not liking the idea for one reason or another, but no one has presented anything that would seem to be in the same league as the hadozee or vistani type scenario unless I'm missing something.
The Kingpriest being called 'Good', and the 'good' gods helping in a genocide.

For some weird reason, praising genocides is out of fashion these days.

the fact that the go to example of "too much good" doesn't seem to have any good in it... and the punishments is genocidal

more "I can't imagine a big company trying to avoid controversy publishing this world"

I don't know if either is more realistic... I prefer old EU but I don't mind Sequel (too much).

you think nothing ever changing is more creative then new takes on old ideas?

I think painting everything with the same brush makes for a lot of generic sameness. Not everyone wants to play in a "everyone's happy and generally gets along" Exandria type world. Boiling down a world to "It's mostly like the others but had a Dragon War". I'd rather celebrate a world for its differences and not how much it's like every other world. Faerun has dragon wars. Faerun has Mage Towers/Schools. Faerun has had world shaking disasters. I dont want to play in Faerun but with slightly different halflings.

We wont ever agree but what you see as "fixing it", I see as "just making it like every other world".

Been here before though when they irreversibly damaged Faerun (for 4th ed). Fully expect to see it again when they "fix" Planescape and Dark Sun.

As for your last sentence, "reimaginings" are rarely as good as the original. Better to create something fresh and new. but I know they need the name recognition. "Dragonlance" will sale better than "War World" or whatever.

What.

And even if that were an accurate description of Exandria, I feel like there's a difference between 'not a utopia made up to make a rhetorical point' and 'the gods are omnicidal, but we call them good because their team needs numbers or Daddy will spank them'.

I don't Exandria but I would kill to get out of Faerun and DL is a great start (I want BR and DS too)

I will never play in the realms again... so we are in agreement I DON'T want Faerun

I don't want it like other worlds I want Dragon Lance reimagined and modern take. I don't want cookie cutter. If anything I want MORE variance.

ironically 4e Faerun was the only one I liked since original grey box.

what are we baseing this on? I have seen many remakes and reimagining's that improved on the wroke, and and even if it doesn't, it doesn't take away the original. I like the Amazing SPiderman more then ether of the first two movie attempts (although I dislike the MCU reimagining) I like strange new worlds better then I like The Original Series, but I dislike the Abrahams movies. I prefer Batman Begins and Dark Knight to Adam west (not that I dislike that one) and the batman/returns/forever/and robin series... I like the newest batman better still.

I like the xmen animated universe better then the xmen comics (but I still like the comics) but I like the comics more then most live action movies...

I like the new Dune better then the orginal movie, but I prefer the books to both.

West Side Story is better in the remake
IT is worse in the remake

Better to create something fresh and new.
okay but that's not an option when we are already told this is what is coming

Those are adaptions (of books, comic books, etc) not remakes of an original film or tv show. IE Like The Thing from the 80s is not a remake of the old black and white Thing From Another World film. They are both adaptions of a book.

A remake is like remaking Friday the 13th (which blew) (same with any 80s horror remake from Halloween to Childs Play). Remaking Resident Evil 2 (which was good but not as good as the original.) Etc. Heck. The Force Awakens was practically a remake of A New Hope.
