Those changes don't make the setting different from other modern setting releases, they make it the same. You said you wanted variance. Did you just mean you want it to be just like Exandria, or Eberron?

I still don't know Exandria so maybe... but it is nothing like the steam punk gods may not be real wartorn Eberron... What makes it the same?

So they grouped the gods with individual alignments into categories with names. If two of the FR gods with good alignments suddenly started calling themselves "the gods of good", would  that setting suddenly become unacceptable and need to be "reimagined"?

If the Forgotten Realms gods suddenly called themselves Gods of Good and performed acts of evil, then yes, those gods would need to be changed.

I don't see the issue. Alignment has gotten pretty vestigial by this point and means very little. Are the labels really that important?

In a setting that is generally described as being about the war between good and evil? Yes.

The argument to take out Gotham entirely has certainly been made before.

if superman took a mountain and slammed it into gotham I think some people would say that broke the character...

if the JLA had a meeting, and superman voted to NOT throw a mountain at gotham, but sat back and let (I don't know black adam maybe) do it... that would STILL break the character.

All the changes you suggested are generic "modern standards" stuff. What changes to DL do you want WotC to make that would make it special and unique?

But again, alignment means far less than it used to. If its so married to the setting, maybe that's a sign that it shouldn't be revisited.

but it doesn't take out any of the cool things from the setting... are you saying that the only things that make DL unique is sexist racists ableist or tied to the alignment spectrum?!?! you don't see Krynn as different then (insert ebberon planet name here) or Fearun?

no the esthetic of the world is steam punk, AND the gods may not be real are 2 different thoughts on how Ebberron is very different then Dragon Lance
