Interesting. I'm interested in this "unusual way to administer the test", but I'm wary that it'll be something vague with no specific guidelines whatsoever. In that case, I can't recommend enough for DMs to grab the Towers of High Sorcery supplement. The information there is pure gold.

Apart from that, sounds like the classic DL stuff... So I'm happy 😊

I said it in the other thread but I love (and I know people will push back against) the idea that the player gets to be part of this, and help make the adventure.

I've always incorporated player's opinions and ideas in the Test. After all, the Test is not only about magical prowess, but a real test of character and personality. The idea, I think, is to see how the would-be Mage reacts under the most stressful circumstances and, at the same time, what they'd do in order to "win". That tells you a lot, in my opinion, about how they can be expected to act once the most powerful spells in reality are available to them.

Yeah I agree, but there has historically been push back to any player side adventure building on this site.

It makes so much sense for the Test. Nothing is worse than a DM trying to tell the player who they are and the Test is very much so a scenario where they should learn something about themselves as a character. Back in the 2E days, before running a test for a mage I had some questions I went through to help shape what might be in scope and the player 100% had input into telling me things they held dear and such.

Worth mentioning, Schneider again references the location of the adventure when he talks about the location of the Tower of High Sorcery as being very far from where our story takes place so anyone expecting something wide in scope is going to be sorely disappointed I think.

Hmm, perhaps we’ll have an interaction with Fistandilus?

I like the ideas behind this, but I’m leery about how the mechanics & implementation will end up.

Interesting commentary, particularly that you might not emerge from the test aligned with the tower you expected when you started. Is this an adventure or a source book? It sounds like an adventure, and I would hope that the ideas and what mechanics there are can be easily separated if that's the case.

Adventure. Like with Curse of Strahd, it looks like it will have an initial player section (Kender race and such things) but the majority of it is adventure. They specifically mention the test coming about during the adventure.
