This epic war story begins with an invitation to a friend's funeral and three optional prelude encounters that guide you into the world of Krynn. Amy Dallen is joined by Eugenio Vargas to share some details about how these opening preludes work and some advice on using them in your own D&D games.

There is also information on the three short 'prelude' adventures which introduce players to the world of Krynn:
  • Eye in the Sky -- ideal for sorcerers, warlocks, wizards, or others seeking to become members of the Mages of High Sorcery.
  • Broken Silence -- ideal for clerics, druids, paladins, and other characters with god-given powers.
  • Scales of War -- ideal for any character and reveals the mysterious draconians.
The article discusses Session Zero for the campaign and outlines what to expect in a Dragonlance game -- war, death, refugees, and so on.

We once used to term "party evil" to describe such characters. They were greedy and selfish and occasionally a jerk, but they didn't do anything to upset their good allies, frequently helped others if for no other reason as to be part of the adventure, was loyal to the party (again, to avoid being kicked out) and often fought against evil because they were the antagonists of the game.

After several years, it dawned on us there was a term for someone who wasn't good, but worked with good to oppose evil. That term was Neutral.
nothing about evil says you can't have friends... and if your friends want to kill the dragon, you have some fun killing the dragon...
but god help you if you hurt the friends of an evil person

It got hard to justify why the evil necromancer was always saving villages, fighting monsters terrorizing the countryside, stopping evil cults and overthrowing tyrannical despots, except that's what the majority of the party was doing and the player kinda wanted to play his PC, so he went along with helping the majority good party. But he's still totally Evil! See? Skeletons. Spooky!

Things were fine as soon as we realized that neutral PCs could walk the edge of using questionable means to achieve some greater good.

Yeah, evil people do evil things. I have a friend playing a neutral necromancer right now in my campaign. He really had to bend over backwards with his backstory to make it work.

Maybe because they are raising the dead bodies of the village residents to act as meat shields?

man letting fallen soldiers defend there home even in death (while souls go to heavens) sounds SOOOO evil... oh wait LG invokers and diviners can do that too... what in 5e makes a necromancer evil? gaining temps from killing enemies? gaining +1 to animate dead, or the necrotic resistance?

Pretty sure I wouldn't be a fan of the desecration of my loved ones, but we all have our own views. :)
