Getting rid of oppositional schools makes every wizard a "generalist" that specializes in something. Specializing in funky book magic and ability to use every school really isn't much different than the ability to use every school and specialize in divination.

Agreed. Scribes isn't a generalist wizard either IMO. It is a sad attempt if that was its goal.
