I imagine because the only sort of game that could actually become a new tentpole for players and 3pp to rally behind is a game that is basically 5.X.
Eh. There are lots of iterations on the D&D formula that have the potential to be just as popular if not more so. 5E is in many ways a rather mediocre product (likely deliberately so after 4E* took a swing for the fences and angered a lot of longtime players). There's plenty of room for improvement. See: 13th Age, Shadow of the Demon Lord, and about a dozen other D&D-likes.

This is not a 4E thread, please do not detail it into an extended discussion of whether 4E "failed", as such is the vocal component for the Invoke Redtext spell.

They won't be as popular. Any of the competing ORC games that try to be "5e but better" will fail to become the tentpole.

I think SotDL and 13A are great games, but they aren't going to capture the disaffected 5e market.

Note the Critical Role team supports “New systems” and “Original ideas.”

I can see Critical Role releasing a new system but I seriously doubly it will be a 5e clone. Or indeed a clone of any edition.

As someone who has fallen off of watching their livestream content because of the moments where 5E's expectations, especially the pacing of combat, get in the way of fun watching? I sure do hope they move away from that kind of design and toward something that leans into their strengths as a table. Purely selfishly, as a viewer.
