Eh. There are lots of iterations on the D&D formula that have the potential to be just as popular if not more so. 5E is in many ways a rather mediocre product (likely deliberately so after 4E* took a swing for the fences and angered a lot of longtime players). There's plenty of room for improvement. See: 13th Age, Shadow of the Demon Lord, and about a dozen other D&D-likes.I imagine because the only sort of game that could actually become a new tentpole for players and 3pp to rally behind is a game that is basically 5.X.
