If they’re hell-bent on a 3D VTT with all the bells and whistles, full automation, animation, etc then the should bring back 4E
While a full-on reversion to 4e is unlikely (just like a full-on reversion to 3e or 2e or 1e is unlikely), if they actually get their VTT off the ground and start pushing it, I suspect that there's a good chance that we eventually get that "tactical module" for the game that was floated back during the D&D Next playtest.

Won't happen. Any chance of that was killed last week. Sorry.
It's certainly not going to be 1dnd thing.

But if they released a separate "DnD: tactics" game (which is what 4e should of been called in the first place), with VTT, that would be cool.
But since we are talking 4e, I want healing surges back.
They are adding a few ways to spend hit dice besides a short rest.

Hmm...
I would also be ok if they changed healing word, and possibly a few other spells, to spend a hit die.

Or just go for it and have rulesets for every version of D&D available on the VTT. Let the computer figure out how to convert one iteration from another so everyone could play whatever version they want but still play together.

The Bloodied condition. Action Points instead of namby pamby "inspiration". Paragon Paths/Prestige Classes/Epic Destinies to help expand a character at higher levels- subclasses just don't do enough. Leader classes like the Warlord. The ability to quickly modify or build a monster of a given CR. The Defender role. Spell-less characters balanced against spellcasters, ala the Tome of Battle. Alternate magic systems like binding Vestiges or Incarnum soulmelds.
