Also, I gather the villain is, ultimately, Thay? Thay makes a really solid case for greatest perennial evil on Faerun. There have been more acute threats throughout history, and certainly bigger, more existential or metaphysical threats, but Thay is just kind of always there, chugging away in the background, still handcrafting traditional hickory smoked evil the way your grandpa liked it.

Szazz Tam once almost destroyed the entire D&D multiverse using his Dread Rings, to create his own, using magics forbidden to even the Gods, and in his failure wrecked a huge part of previously lovely (if evil) Thay and triggering a religious and political civil war in Thay and made a deal with Bane to boot.

I watched the game from 15 minutes before kickoff to the end, it wasn't on during the game itself, so it wasn't aired as a Superbowl ad. With a cursory internet glance, a clickbait website listed "superbowl movie trailers" and made conjecture of what could be aired, including listing the D&D movie and several that didn't get aired. Another site linked to them as a source, and so it went.

The official DnD Movie Twitter account referred to the advert that way. It was just in pregame and some, but not all of the ad trackers, consider those when doing Super Bowl ad reviews (CBS does, Ad Week doesn't)

that explains why I didn't see it - I was driving to the super bowl party

I was the youngest person at said party, I would have loved to have heard what people thought of that ad...

I saw the 30 second spot about 15 minutes before kickoff and then a 15 second spot in the first quarter. The two full length trailers are now up to 31M views combined on YouTube, but it doesn't look like they got much of a bump from the SB commercial.
