General DCC RPG thread

I have sat at tables with experienced DCC players and had rules argued.
That sounds like a hassle. I've never experienced that in DCC. Most of the judges in the community seem to feel much the same as I do, if their "lols" over the idea of arguing RAW is any indication. If a player said "But that's not what the book says!" I'd point them to page 314. Bullet points 1 and 4...

"The judge is always right. Let the rules bend to you not the other way around."

"Fear no rule. I know you will homebrew this game: I trust it will remain recognizable but different from as I conceived it. Such is as it should be."

I guess I must have been lucky in that the players and judges understood the admonitions listed in DCC.
One of the main DCC podcasts is on RAW.
All due respect to Matt and Stephan, aka GrapeApe and DMBadWrongFun, I wouldn't describe RAW as one of Goodman Games' "main" anything. The highest viewed video of that series doesn't have 800 views. Oh, wait. I'll watch that one again...now it has 800 views.
You handwaving RAW like it does not matter is not true for many, many players.
No, me handwaving RAW doesn't change it mattering to many players. But that's just not a thing in the DCC community or much of the wider OSR community. Homebrewing, hacking, and rulings not rules are by far the norm. Sticking with RAW is the incredibly rare exception.
I strongly recommend that people give DCC a shot. It is a fun flavour of D&D and I played 8 hours of DCC type games at GaryCon. I have played DCC at every GaryCon and 100% had a good experience.
Awesome. It's a wonderful game.
That does not mean that I do not find it to be the greatest system for an ongoing campaign.
If you like what DCC does, then it's great for campaigns.

I'm considering giving max hp at 1st level. This includes stamina bonus/penalty, but does not include hp from 0 level. A cleric with 8 stamina would have 7hp, while a warrior with 13 Stamina would have 13hp.
If you think that's what you and your players want, go for it. Leveled DCC characters are a bit tougher than other OSR characters and have access to more healing. They get extra hp from 0-level and the cleric's lay on hands ability is only limited by deity disapproval, which can be reduced via sacrifices. They also have the bleeding out rule and flip the body. Bleeding out is level # of rounds to be saved from death at 0 hp. And flipping the "dead" body of a fellow adventurer within an hour of their "death" gives them a luck check to survive. They're nowhere near as robust as 5E characters, but they can take a beating.
Anyway, I'm curious to hear about anybody else's House Rules for DCC.
I ignore the tiny +1 or +2 bonuses and use the dice chain instead.

I drop the "spend luck to avoid corruption" rule as it's such a rare thing anyway. It's also a rather iconic part of DCC that just burning 1 luck to avoid it is practically nothing. Better to have it actually happen in game to reinforce the "magic is dangerous" theme of the game.

I also really like the carousing rules from Lankhmar, so import those. It helps reinforce the sword & sorcery vibe of the game. Start with the PCs broke and drunk or hungover and needing money or on the run. Helps kick things into gear if you're not continuing an adventure one session to the next. The recovery times for some stuff in DCC is a bit long, so time jumping to when everyone is healthy again is just easier.

For people just getting into DCC, note that Goodman has several de facto campaigns in addition to the individual modules. You have the Appalachian-inspired Shudder Mountain adventures, the Journey to the Center of Aerth hidden world adventures, the planetary fantasy of the Purple Planet and one could also daisy-chain together all their horror adventures. Lots of possibilities.
I found the articles I was thinking about and edited them into the 3rd post.

I can't wait for the hardback reprint of Purple Planet. Such a cool box...but so expensive now.

I am looking forward to trying it out. I got the digital pdf when Humble Bundle had a deal going on, but I do prefer getting the actual physical book at some point.

I pre-ordered the Dying Earth box set from GameNerdz so once I get that in, I plan on having my DCC options include the Main Book+Dying Earth box set+Weird Frontiers+The Class Alphabet for player character options. (Plus Lankhmar rule options).

Wow. Way to dive in. Welcome to the band.

Watch out for mixing in Weird Frontiers options, they are more potent than baseline DCC and the official Goodman Games stuff.

If you’re a fan of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic stuff, check out Mutant Crawl Classics. It’s a love letter to Planet of the Apes, Gamma World, and Kamandi. Great stuff.
