D&D (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

I mean modern terminology for hybrids is combining the names, with the order depending on which species is the mother/father. For example ligers and tigons. Or pizzly bears and grolar bears.

But I'm not sure that using animal classification will fly too well...

No, this is where they are losing your interest. It would be very helpful not to try to pretend that your interests represent anyone other than yourself.

I think this a very unfair characterization. I have no doubt there are people for whom this doesn’t impact their interest in a negative way. But I also have seen plenty of posts, and had a large number of table conversations, where this is an issue for people. In short, I do think I am expressing a point of view that other people share. I wouldn’t presume into know how widespread the view is, as I haven’t taken a survey, but my instinct based on reading forums, social media and interacting with gamer friends, is it isn’t an insignificant number of people

Now I could very well be wrong. But I am not simply pretending that my ideas are shared by others. I could flip that on you as well. Maybe you are wrong about this; have you considered that possibility?

Yes, because acknowledging racism is based in fear. Not like anyone ever suffers from being called half breed after all. Oh, wait, yes they do and you know this because I know I've told you this before. But, hey, nice to be characterized as engaging in moral panic and being a member of hte unreasonable mob. Good to know that conversation can possibly be productive when the other half of the conversation considers me to be irrational. :erm:

But people are also denied the half portion of their identity all the time. Personally I don’t think D&D races key to real world race (it obviously means race if beings like you might have in science fiction). But if we are going to discuss the whole half thing, there is definitely a much more nuanced conversation to be had there. Yes racists can use someone’s mixed background as an attack. That’s because racists don’t see past skin color and attribute all kinds of characteristics to a person based on their racial, ethnic and even religious background. There is nothing wrong with being half one race or ethnicity and half another. And in my opinion, ceding the ground that the term half is itself a problem, opens that door in a bad way and can even lead down the very dark road of seeing things like interracial relationships, inter cultural relationships as something bad. Everyone is different when it comes to how they conceptualize and experience their background, but I know plenty of people who are either proud of the “half” label or who at least see it as an important part of who they are

Now you can do that, use that term, but also understand a lot of other things, like it’s a label that a person with bad intentions could misuse or use to force an identity in someone that doesn’t fit their sense of self (perhaps they are half this itchakf that, but to them what matters is what side raised them or what culture they grew up in).

As I believe President Obama pointed out, he may have one white parent and one black parent but to a lot of people he’s just black.

I’m sure a lot of mixed people find this to be true. If I have black(ish) skin, I am black.

Or in D&D terms a half-elf has pointed ears so they are an elf etc.

Which I think would be a failing of the game system if “pick one core race and you are just that but slightly different on the outside.”

WotC's decisions were/are based in fear. I wasn't talking about you at all.

........

In the modern age, love unites all folk. People of mixed ancestry can be found all across T..... Some ancestries are biologically improbable (such as a goliath and a gnome having a child), but sufficient application of magic makes even those unions possible. However, money can be a limiting factor in such things, as having a skilled mage on hand during conception and childbirth is an expensive process.

....r....
Sounds like Xanth's love springs. you too can have the love child of your dreams. 99GP for 99 months. Just apply to Dr moreau

For me too... but it might be the most simple solution.

Have every half species as a feat package and just use tasha's cauldron's custom lineage and fetch 2 feats to start with.
I think WotC has already presented the simplest solution.

All of these proposals to allow players to shop for different species in order to create what they see as an ideal mix have unfortunate real world connotations, and I think WotC should steer well clear of the inevitable controversy.
