D&D (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

Indeed! My point is the DM needs to know which druid class the player is playing before he can answer the question. Simply "Druid" doesn't provide enough information.
so what, that is true for other classes as well, it’s not like for them the 2014 and 2024 versions are identical either.

Also, if the player knows and the DM trusts the player, that is sufficient too.

Worst case one of them gets it a level too early / too late because the DM used one of the versions to decide without realizing there is a difference. That is hardly game-breaking

I like "D&D 5e: New and Improved Flavor Edition". I was going to go with "New 5e", but I figured people might not get the joke:

Right now, I'm trying to process if you're referencing the urban legend that New Coke was brought out solely so Coca-Cola could reformulate the older Coke, 'realize their mistake' and then release Coke Classic with the new sweetener, basically gaslighting everyone that the Coke Classic was indeed the 'original' Coke.

For the 2014 druid, the DM may also need to rule if the druid PC has ever seen a condor or equivalent bird before, so this isn't a question the players can neccesarily answer themselves.
Why wouldn't I know? I mean I know the classes of all of the PCs in my group.

Though, if I am being honest, if either druid asked me to wildshape into a condor, regardless of level, I would say yes. I simply care more about fun than RAW.

No tinfoil hats here; I don't think WotC is competent enough for a conspiracy like that, lol. More just the idea that Coca-Cola took something everyone liked, replaced it even though no one was asking for it, and had the gall to label it as the "new and improved" version.

Only to have that blow up in their face (which I hope New 5e doesn't do- even if I'm not a huge fan of 5e or decisions they have made, I don't wish ill on Wizards. My disappointment led to other people's joy, so I have to live with it).

I'm sure you do, but not every DM does. Especially not the ones running Adventure League or similar pick-up games.
Yes, but that's not exactly hard to fix. You ask your player. I mean, basic communication is still a thing, right? (IMO it's starting to look like a dying art).

At the moment, the answer of "which version" is pretty simple. "Regular 5e" or "1D&D playtest". In 2024 it will probably be "Old 5e" or "50th Anniversary D&D".

I don't know why so many people are getting hung up on the name. They WILL name the books when they're ready to market them. They don't have to do it now, but even then, they HAVE. They called it "OneD&D" and it's a playtest. Nothing is set in stone yet.
